Job description

Venor is proud to partner with A-Gas in the search for a Process Engineer to join their team in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. A-Gas is a global leader in the recovery, reclamation, and lifecycle management of refrigerants and specialty gases. Through innovative processing and emissions-reduction technologies, A-Gas supports a circular economy by recovering valuable materials and returning them to productive use.

What You'll Be Doing

Reporting to the Director of Engineering, Americas, the Process Engineer will be the primary engineering resource supporting A-Gas' Dartmouth facility, with additional support to its Stoney Creek, Ontario operation. This newly created role will focus on optimizing existing processes, improving capacity and reliability, and delivering capital projects as A-Gas continues to grow its Canadian operations. Working closely with plant operations and A-Gas' North American engineering team, you'll have the autonomy to identify opportunities and lead projects from concept and design through procurement, construction, commissioning, and startup. As the Process Engineer, you'll lead capital and process improvement projects from concept through commissioning and startup, evaluating existing processes and equipment to improve capacity, reliability, safety, and performance. You'll develop process designs, equipment specifications, cost estimates, and capital requests, and support the optimization and modernization of A-Gas' refrigerant recovery, reclamation, and separation systems. Day to day, you'll coordinate equipment procurement, contractors, construction, and commissioning activities, and lead or support process safety activities including HAZOP, risk assessments, and Management of Change. You'll also troubleshoot process, equipment, instrumentation, and control system issues alongside plant teams, identify opportunities to improve efficiency and environmental performance, and support future capital planning across A-Gas' Canadian operations. The role includes periodic travel to A-Gas facilities in Ontario and the United States.

What We're Looking For

You're an experienced process engineer with a strong technical foundation in gas processing, refrigeration/HVAC systems, petrochemical separations, or a similarly demanding industrial environment — somewhere you've worked hands‑on with pressurized systems, phase change, and process safety. You enjoy staying close to plant operations, solving problems as they come up, and seeing projects through from early evaluation to startup. You're a strong communicator who works well independently but also collaborates naturally with operations, contractors, and engineering colleagues across sites. Periodic travel to A-Gas' other North American facilities doesn't faze you, and you're motivated by the challenge of modernizing and improving an established operation — bringing fresh engineering rigor to existing systems rather than starting with a blank slate.

Qualifications
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Nova Scotia, or eligible for registration with Professional Engineers Nova Scotia.
  • Engineer-in-Training candidates with strong relevant experience may also be considered.
  • Experience with pressurized liquefied gas systems, or specification of high‑pressure gas systems.
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline from an accredited institution.
  • 5+ years of relevant engineering experience in gas processing, refrigeration, petrochemical, or a related industrial processing environment.
  • Proven track record leading engineering projects end-to-end — from concept development and business case preparation through detailed design, procurement, construction, commissioning, and closeout.
  • Experience facilitating or contributing to HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA, risk assessments, Management of Change, and other process safety activities.
  • Strong grasp of chemical processing unit operations, particularly fractional distillation, separation processes, heat transfer, and fluid flow.
  • Applied knowledge of thermodynamics, including vapor‑liquid equilibrium and phase behavior.
  • Working knowledge of process control systems, instrumentation, control strategies, and operational troubleshooting.
  • Working knowledge of relevant codes, standards, and regulatory requirements, including ASME BPVC Section VIII, ASME B31.3, CSA standards, pressure equipment requirements, applicable provincial regulations in Ontario and Nova Scotia, and other relevant industry standards.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with process simulation software (such as Aspen HYSYS, Aspen Plus, or ChemCAD) is an asset, as is familiarity with AutoCAD, Bluebeam, plant design software, or P&ID development tools.
  • Exposure to Lean, Six Sigma, Kaizen, root‑cause analysis, or other structured continuous improvement methodologies is a plus, along with experience using CMMS, data analysis, or dashboard tools.
Why A-Gas?

This is a chance to modernize and elevate an established operation, with the autonomy to make it your own. As the sole engineering resource in Dartmouth, you'll bring fresh thinking to existing systems and processes, and your projects will visibly move the business forward. You'll also plug into A-Gas' broader North American engineering team — gaining exposure to multiple sites and real room to grow as the Canadian operation scales.
