Overview

St-Laurent Academy Private School is a dynamic, growing and community based private school, with over 500 students in attendance. Our school draws from areas all over rural and urban Ottawa. To best service our families and students, we provide a private bus service for our students, with our own Team of wonderful drivers. We are looking to expand this team, as our school is expanding!

Note: All candidates applying MUST live in the Ottawa area and within an easy commute to our school, located at 50 Maple Lane, in the Rockcliffe / LindenLea neighbourhood.

General Position Outline
  • Morning pick up of students and drop off at school.
  • Afternoon / end of school day pick up at school and drop off.
  • In between these 2 daily required shifts, our drivers are scheduled and responsible for the safe travels of our students to: daily field trips & events, sport / team events, as well as special full school events that occur throughout the school year.
  • Bus drivers are fully responsible for the maintenance, daily cleaning & washing, and overall safety components of their bus. Each driver is provided with their own bus and depending on the route, it can be a full sized school bus or a smaller compact school bus.
  • Bus drivers must be well versed in all routes and ensure that they review our yearly event plans so that they are familiar with the different weekly locations that they will need to transport students to. (locations, timing, traffic issues, best routes, etc.) This includes practicing the routes during down time.
  • Bus drivers are responsible for the positive and professional interactions with all students on their bus, as well as the families that they interact with each day. This includes knowing each student name, grade and age, as well as understanding any special student requirements.
  • Bus drivers are responsible for ensuring the safety of all students during transportation and for reaching out to the School Management if there are any concerns. Note: School Management will follow up and communicate on all or any concerns / issues and not the driver.
Requirements
  • 3 - 5 years minimum bus driving experience.
  • Class G license (or higher) in good standing.
  • Valid Ontario Drivers license.
  • Clear and positive driver's record (proof of a safe record is essential).
  • Vulnerable sector & criminal records police check.
  • First aid & CPR training with certificate.
  • Pass a Ministry of Transportation-approved medical exam and vision test.
  • Pass a Ministry of Transporation knowledge test on operating school buses and traffic laws.
  • Pass a road test in a school bus.
  • Complete the government-approved School Bus Driver Improvement Course.
  • Must be reliable, caring, and committed to the safety of riders.
  • Must be able to work well with the school families / parents, management and students or all ages (Kindergarten to Grade 12).
  • Must be prepared for additional training in areas like student management, bus evacuation procedures, and other safety-related topics.

  • This is an annually, 12 month paid position, which is renewed every school year.
  • All statutory holidays and extensive paid vacation time, including : 2 weeks in December, 2 weeks in March, and approximately 6 - 7 weeks each summer. Typically, our drivers follow the school year schedule including the time when students are not present and school is closed.
  • Our drivers get to know our families well and build strong relationships with them - the consistency and stability of the schedule allows for this to occur and for our school community to feel close.
  • Potential for an annual signing bonus via e-transfer (to be determined by the School Director & CEO).
