Principal Structural Engineer - Built Environment

Mott MacDonald has an immediate need for a Principal Structural Engineer to work on Built Environment related projects in Canada and assist in directing Built Environment staff performing planning, design and construction of institutional, aviation, healthcare, governmental, transportation, and general infrastructure projects.

As a Principal Engineer, your roles and responsibilities are expected to include:

1. Leading structural engineering designs of buildings and transit infrastructure including management and supervision of structural engineering teams.
2. Managing Built Environment projects, including management and coordination of multi-disciplinary design teams.
3. Implementing quality control and assurance of engineering designs.
4. Being a structural Engineer of Record (EoR) for all stages of projects.
5. Mentoring and training staff within the structural engineering team.
6. Driving low carbon, sustainable design solutions.
7. Working directly with clients, contractors and other partners, taking responsibility for delivering work on time, on budget, and to the quality standards of the firm.
8. Being a role model for advancing our health and safety culture.
9. Collaborating with other disciplines and offices across the global Mott MacDonald group.
10. Seeking opportunities to improve the efficiency of design processes through BIM, automation and AI.
11. Assisting in business development and marketing projects.
12. Assisting with proposals and preparing estimates of work-hours and fees.

Candidate Specification:

You will have experience in infrastructure, transportation, aviation and/or built environment market segments and possess the following skills and experience:

1. A Bachelor’s degree in civil or structural engineering with a preference for a master's degree in structural engineering or earthquake engineering.
2. A Structural P.Eng license, or immediate eligibility for licensing as an engineer in Canada is required. Structural P. Eng license in BC is considered an asset.
3. A minimum of 15 years’ design experience in the built environment sector.
4. A minimum of 5 years’ design experience working on Canadian built environment projects.
5. Experience in the structural design of one or more of the following building types: airports, transit/train stations or hospitals.
6. Experience being a structural engineer of record for all stages of built environment projects including concept, detailed design and construction administration.
7. Experience in working directly with clients, contractors, architects and other design disciplines.
8. Demonstrated ability in design and analysis of structural systems including steelwork and reinforced concrete to Canadian design codes.
9. Ability in seismic design and analysis of structures to Canadian design codes.
10. Demonstrated ability in both new build and building renovation/redevelopment/repurposing.
11. Strong knowledge of local and national codes and other legislative requirements.
12. Excellent ability in use of structural design and analysis software such as ETABS, SAP2000, or Robot.
13. Demonstrated ability to deliver projects and structural design packages on-time and budget to the satisfaction of clients.
14. Experience in mentoring and managing structural team members.
15. Ability in assuring the quality of deliverables for yourself and the team.
16. Experience in delivering projects using BIM and technology driven solutions.
17. Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate to internal and external stakeholders in a professional manner, both written and verbally.
18. Positive ‘can-do’ attitude, to working with colleagues and clients.
19. Ability to travel within Canada and internationally as required to support projects is preferred.
20. Experience in the application of automation, computational design and/or AI in the production of designs is preferred.
21. Ability in timber and masonry is preferred.
22. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
