Job summary

Hatch is seeking a Principal – Risk Management in Mississauga to lead risk programs for mega projects across mining, energy, chemicals and infrastructure. You will guide risk-based decisions, develop procedures, and mentor teams to grow the global Risk Practice.

The role requires 12+ years of experience, expertise in process safety and project controls, and strong stakeholder engagement. Travel may be required; base salary reflects market norms in Canada.

Qualifications

  • 12+ years of combined experience in risk management, process/technical risk or process safety engineering, project controls and workshop facilitation on large projects.
  • Background as a process engineer with full engineering life-cycle experience (FEED/FEL, EPCM, commissioning).
  • Expert knowledge of ISO 31000/31010, PMI, AACE and related standards; ability to apply them to client needs.

Responsibilities

  • Provide risk inputs to proposals and tailor activities to scope and client requirements.
  • Develop and coordinate integrated risk management frameworks for projects and clients.
  • Lead qualitative and quantitative risk analyses including ICSRA/QCRA/QSRA; facilitate risk workshops.
  • Lead process safety studies (HAZOP/HAZID) on mega projects and support risk assessments across disciplines.
  • Advise on risk management effectiveness and spread knowledge across teams.

Recent growth of the Risk Practice has created an immediate need for an individual to join our team in the role of Principal – Risk Management within the Mississauga Office. We are searching for a senior-level practitioner who brings 12+ years of combined experience in project management, process/technical risk engineering, decision analysis, risk management, and project controls on mega and large projects in the mining, energy, chemicals, and infrastructure sectors.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Engagement Manager and functionally to the Regional Manager – Risk, the incumbent in this role will provide clients and engagement teams with expert and unbiased support in all aspects related to risk management — spanning both project/enterprise risk management and technical process risk engineering. This role is pivotal in ensuring that risk management is a value-add process that supports decisions and the achievement of clients' and Hatch's objectives.

This role will also assist the Global Director, Risk in furthering and growing the global Risk Practice and assist with the efforts to enhance the profile and effectiveness of the Risk function within Hatch and within the mining, metals, chemicals, and infrastructure sectors.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide risk inputs to proposals, tailoring risk management activities and level of effort to the proposal scope and client's requirements
  • Develop, implement, and coordinate integrated and sustainable risk management frameworks for projects and clients
  • Facilitate project qualitative risk assessments and Quantitative Cost Risk Analysis (QCRA) and Quantitative Schedule Risk Analysis (QSRA), including Integrated Cost & Schedule Risk Analysis (ICSRA), decision analysis, and value improvement workshops
  • Lead or support process safety and technical risk studies, including HAZOP, HAZID, and related process hazard analyses, on mega and large capital projects
  • Apply project management principles to plan, scope, and deliver risk management work packages on time and within budget, coordinating across multidisciplinary project teams
  • Act as a strategic adviser on projects, providing guidance and insights that support risk-based decisions and the achievement of objectives; assess the effectiveness of project risk management processes and advise stakeholders on how to enhance risk management effectiveness
  • Assist the Global Director, Risk with the development of risk management procedures and functional guides; business development and client engagement; adoption of innovative risk management processes and tools (AI-based); development of a mature risk culture on projects and within Hatch; development of risk and decision training for stakeholders
  • Establish and maintain relationships with internal and external clients; establish trust, credibility, and respect
  • Contribute to fostering a knowledge-sharing culture by actively participating in the risk and decision knowledge networks and collaborative forums
Qualifications and Requirements
  • Post-secondary engineering (process, chemical, or related discipline) or business degree from a recognized university; a professional risk, project management, or decision analysis designation is desirable (e.g., CRM, PMI-RMP, GARP, PMP, AACE, etc.); P.Eng. licensure, MBA, or PhD is a strong asset
  • Minimum 12 years of combined experience in risk management, process/technical risk or process safety engineering, project management, decision analysis, project controls, and workshop facilitation involving large groups of people
  • Background as a process engineer, with hands‑on experience across the full engineering life-cycle (FEED/FEL, detailed engineering, EPC/EPCM, commissioning, and operations optimization) considered a strong asset
  • Demonstrated project management experience, including planning, scheduling, budgeting, and leading cross‑functional teams on large/mega projects
  • Expert knowledge in the application of International Risk Management Standards, i.e., ISO 31000, ISO 31010, PRAM, PMI, and industry best practices (i.e., AACE, IPA, etc.)
  • Hands‑on expertise conducting and interpreting QCRA (Quantitative Cost Risk Analysis), QSRA (Quantitative Schedule Risk Analysis), and Integrated Cost & Schedule Risk Analysis, using tools such as @Risk, Safran, or similar
  • Practical experience facilitating or leading HAZOP, HAZID, Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA), and related process hazard/process safety reviews
  • Expert knowledge in decision analysis, strategic planning, and risk management process; ability to adapt these processes to client and project needs; understanding of how risk creates value and supports decisions
  • Good understanding of engineering, project delivery, and contracting strategies such as FEL, ECP, EPCM, and collaborative contracting (i.e., alliance)
  • Ability to educate stakeholders in the value of risk management and how it supports decisions and objectives
  • Good understanding of and experience with project management, cost estimating, and project scheduling principles, tools, and techniques
  • Expert knowledge of quantitative models of cost and schedule, and modern risk management systems/software (i.e., Predict!, CURA, ARM, etc.)
  • Ability to rely on data analytics to identify patterns and predict potential risks; manage and interpret large datasets to inform risk assessments and decision-making
  • Constantly seeks innovative methodologies and tools to manage and mitigate risks
  • Strong team player with excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills in English; similar skills in a second language such as French, Spanish, Portuguese, or Chinese are desirable
  • Ability to oversee the risk management programs of concurrent multiple projects
  • Ability to manage competing priorities effectively — routine requirement to work to deadlines imposed by clients, which may require completion of unplanned risk management activities in a short time frame
  • Must be a self-starter and problem solver, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to travel to other Hatch offices or project sites as required, sometimes extensively and on relatively short notice
Compensation

Base salary range: $130,000 – $180,000
