Job description

e-Zinc is an energy storage venture based in Toronto with a breakthrough technology poised to disrupt the market. As the global energy grid moves to higher levels of penetration of renewable energy, there is a surging need for affordable, flexible, long-duration energy storage. e-Zinc is uniquely positioned to meet this demand as the first company in the world to “metalize” electricity.

Backed by over CAD $80 million in funding from leading global strategic and financial investors - such as Toyota Ventures, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Eni, Evok Innovations, and BDC - e-Zinc has garnered international recognition for its proprietary technology and visionary roadmap. Highlights include:

  • $1M Grand Prize winner of the Impact Canada Charging the Future Challenge
  • Awarded a $1.6M grant from Breakthrough Energy Solutions Canada
  • Secured over $12M in funding across three projects from Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC)
  • Recipient of a USD $1.3M grant from the California Energy Commission

As e-Zinc moves toward commercialization, e-Zinc is expanding its team to bring our transformative technology to market and support the future of renewable energy.

e-Zinc is seeking an accomplished Principal Scientist/Engineer to provide technical leadership for the development and commercialization of our next-generation zinc battery technology. Reporting to the Manager of Cell & Pack Engineering, this person will serve as the technical authority responsible for defining cell and pack architectures, guiding technology decisions, and translating emerging electrochemical innovations into robust, manufacturable products.

You will work across Product Engineering, Technology, Manufacturing, Validation, and Supply Chain to ensure that cell and pack designs deliver the performance, reliability, safety, and cost required for commercial deployment.

This role is ideal for an experienced technical leader who enjoys solving complex multidisciplinary challenges, influencing technical direction across teams, and mentoring engineers through technical excellence.

PositionScope andResponsibilities
Technical Leadership
  • Serve as the technical authority for Cell & Pack Engineering, establishing technical direction for product architecture and system integration.
  • Lead the development of next-generation battery cell and pack designs that balance performance, manufacturability, cost, reliability, and safety.
  • Define technical roadmaps and technology maturation plans supporting commercialization.
  • Evaluate technology trade-offs across electrochemistry, mechanical design, electrical integration, thermal management, controls, manufacturing, and system performance.
  • Guide engineering teams through critical technical decisions using analytical and experimental data.
Product Development
  • Lead complex cross-functional engineering programs from concept through validation and commercialization.
  • Translate research discoveries into scalable product solutions with clear technology transfer criteria.
  • Define system-level requirements and ensure alignment between product performance targets and engineering execution.
  • Establish design verification and validation strategies for cells, modules, and battery packs.
  • Drive continuous improvement through root cause investigations, failure analysis, and lessons learned.
Technical Excellence
  • Act as the subject matter expert for battery cell and pack architecture, electrochemical performance, degradation mechanisms, diagnostics, and system integration.
  • Review and approve critical engineering decisions, design reviews, and product specifications.
  • Develop engineering standards, design guidelines, best practices, and technical documentation.
  • Champion analytical and data-driven engineering methodologies across the organization.
  • Identify technical risks early and develop mitigation strategies.
Cross-Functional Leadership
  • Collaborate closely with Technology, Manufacturing, Validation, Quality, Supply Chain, and Product Management to ensure successful product execution.
  • Influence technical direction across multiple engineering disciplines without direct organizational authority.
  • Support supplier selection and technical evaluations for critical components and manufacturing processes.
  • Provide technical leadership during customer discussions, strategic partnerships, and external technical reviews when required.
  • Evaluate system-level trade-offs across electrochemistry, mechanical design, electrical integration, controls, manufacturing, cost, reliability, and safety to optimize overall product performance.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Electrochemistry, or a related discipline.
  • 10+ years of experience developing advanced battery technologies, electrochemical systems, or energy storage products.
  • Demonstrated experience leading complex multidisciplinary engineering programs from concept through commercialization.
  • Deep understanding of battery cell design, pack architecture, electrochemistry, degradation mechanisms, and system integration.
  • Strong understanding of Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), Design Verification (DV), and Validation (PV).
  • Experience defining technical requirements, product architecture, and engineering standards.
  • Proven ability to solve highly complex technical problems using analytical and experimental approaches.
  • Excellent communication skills with demonstrated ability to influence cross-functional teams and senior leadership.

Preferred

  • Experience with zinc-based batteries, metal-air batteries, flow batteries, or other long-duration energy storage technologies.
  • Experience in stationary energy storage or EV battery systems.
  • Familiarity with battery safety standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience with statistical analysis, DOE, FMEA, reliability engineering, and failure analysis.
