Job summary

Babcock Canada Inc. in Victoria, BC is seeking a Senior Principal Engineer to lead the Combat Systems portfolio, providing governance, technical direction, and system integration across complex programs.

You will mentor multidisciplinary teams, ensure lifecycle quality, and collaborate with customers and internal partners while driving risk management. Eligible for Canadian security clearance.

Qualifications

  • Electrical engineering degree and P.Eng. licence in good standing or immediate eligibility in BC.
  • 12+ years of experience as an engineer in a high-integrity environment.
  • 8+ years of Systems Engineering experience in Combat Systems or related domain work.
  • 5+ years of leadership experience leading technical teams and delivering projects.
  • Eligibility for Canadian Secret Security and ITAR clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Provide Principal Engineer level leadership, governance, and technical direction across the Combat Systems portfolio.
  • Apply broad Combat Systems and Systems Engineering experience to resolve complex technical challenges.
  • Lead multidisciplinary work in definition, design, integration, verification, and delivery of emergent work in Combat Systems.
  • Maintain oversight of quality, accuracy, and technical integrity of engineering outputs across the lifecycle.
  • Collaborate with program managers, customers, and internal stakeholders to plan, monitor, and deliver engineering activities.
  • Support technical governance, reviews, and verification activities in Combat Systems.
  • Identify and manage technical and program risks with mitigation actions.
  • Build relationships with customers and internal teams, communicating complex issues clearly.
  • Strengthen organizational capability through coaching and leadership in Combat Systems engineering processes.

To determine final salary, Babcock considers a variety of factors including the successful Candidate’s skills and experience and internal equity. The final base salary offer is at the Company’s sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.

Description

In this role, you will:

  • Provide Principal Engineer level leadership, governance, and technical direction across the growing Combat Systems portfolio.
  • Apply broad Combat Systems and Systems Engineering expertise to resolve complex technical challenges in accordance with applicable procedures, codes, and standards.
  • Lead and mentor multidisciplinary technical work in the definition, design, integration, verification, and delivery of emergent work in support of new and existing Combat Systems.
  • Maintain oversight of the quality, accuracy, completeness, and technical integrity of engineering outputs throughout the engineering lifecycle for Combat Systems.
  • Collaborate with program managers, customers, and internal stakeholders to prioritize, plan, monitor, and deliver engineering activities to the required quality, schedule, and cost.
  • Support technical governance, assurance, reviews, and verification activities in Combat Systems.
  • Identify, assess, communicate, and manage technical and program risks, including the development, implementation, and assessment of mitigation actions.
  • Build effective relationships with customers, external partners, and internal technical teams, clearly communicating complex issues, options, solutions, and risks to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strengthen organizational capability through coaching, mentorship, leadership, and the continuous improvement of Combat Systems engineering processes, standards, methods, and tools.

The ideal candidate brings:

  • An electrical engineering degree from an accredited Canadian educational institute or from a recognized foreign equivalent, and
  • A Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) licence in good standing with current registration or immediate eligibility to register in the Province of British Columbia;
  • Extensive experience (12+ years) as an engineer in a high-integrity engineering environment;
  • Experience (8+ years) in the application of Systems Engineering in Combat Systems or related domain work.
  • Proven leadership skills and experience (5+ years) leading technical teams and delivering technical projects;
  • Deep understanding of Combat Systems and experience (5+ years) in the application of the Systems Engineering design lifecycle;
  • Experience in the physical and functional integration of Victoria Class Submarine Combat Systems (C2, Communications, Sonar, Weapons Handling and Discharge, Navigation, Above Water Sensors) is considered an asset;
  • Experience in the physical and functional integration of Mission Systems within a Defence environment is considered an asset; and
  • Strong demonstrable leadership qualities and excellent inter-personal skills with the ability to work with others, at all levels within the organization and often without direct or formal authority; and
  • You are eligible for a Canadian Secret Security and ITAR Clearance.
