Job summary

The City of Thunder Bay is seeking a qualified Primary Care Paramedic to join the EMS Operations team. Under supervision, you will assess patients, provide treatment and monitoring, and transport safely in accordance with applicable Acts.

Responsibilities include responding to calls, triage, delivering BLS/ALS care per standards, documenting calls, maintaining equipment, coordinating with CACC, and upholding Occupational Health and Safety requirements.

Qualifications

• Must meet the qualifications for primary care paramedic as stipulated in the Ambulance Act regulations.
• Must meet minimum standards and complete mandatory training specified by MOHLTC, EMS Branch, and Superior North EMS.

Responsibilities

• Responds to ambulance calls within required timeframe and reports movements to CACC as required.
• Assesses environmental risks and patient and personal safety needs.
• Performs patient triage assessment and evaluation.
• Delivers patient care per BLS/ALS PCS and ministry standards.
• Documents ambulance calls and incident reports per Ontario standards.
• Cleans, restocks, and decontaminates equipment, supplies, vehicles and base stations.
• Notifies CACC when vehicle is unavailable or removed from service.
• Works safely per the Occupational Health & Safety Act.
• Participates in public relations/education programs.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direct supervision of the Superintendent – EMS Operations, is responsible for performing patient assessment, treatment, and monitoring tasks, which include controlled medical acts while providing safe and timely transport in accordance with the applicable Acts.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Responds to ambulance calls within a specified timeframe and reports each movement of ambulance or emergency response unit immediately to Central Ambulance Communication Centres (CACC) as required by Superior North EMS policies and procedures.
• Assesses environmental risks and responds to patient(s) and personal safety needs.
• Conducts patient triage assessment and evaluation.
• Administers to and provides patient care in accordance with Basic Life Support Patient Care Standards (BLS PCS), Advanced Life Support Patient Care Standards (ALS PCS), and all other required Standards as set by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, Emergency Health Services Branch.
• Provides documentation, including ambulance call reports and incident/collision reports as required and as per the Ontario Ambulance Documentation Standards.
• Cleans, maintains, restocks and/or decontaminates equipment, supplies, vehicles and base stations as required.
• Complies with direction from CACC regarding safe transportation of patients.
• Advises CACC of availability of vehicle and location as required by the BLS PCS; ensures CACC is notified whenever a vehicle is removed from service for repair or maintenance.
• Works safely and in accordance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act.
• Participates in public relations/education programs.
• Performs other duties as may be assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience:

• Must meet the qualifications for primary care paramedic as stipulated in the regulations of the Ambulance Act, as amended
• Must meet minimum standards and complete mandatory training specified by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, Emergency Health Services Branch, and Superior North EMS

Skills/Abilities:

• Must have excellent interpersonal, customer service, and teamwork skills
• Must possess and maintain a valid Ontario Class “F” driver's licence or equivalent
• Must meet the definition of a competent driver as defined by the Corporation
• Must have the ability to work safely and within the Occupational Health and Safety Act

Assets:

• One to two years’ experience as a primary care paramedic

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

• Must be authorized by the pre-hospital care program as a primary care paramedic
• Must remain a competent driver as defined by the Corporation
• May be required to provide a successful driver’s record (uncertified)
• Must undergo a successful Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC)
• Prior to commencing employment, must provide documentary evidence of having undergone a one-step tuberculosis skin test
