Job description

* Undertake the pre-operative assessments and screening using the Clinics pre-assessment process.* Take an in depth history from the patient and evaluate previously known health issues.* Ensure that the appropriate pre-operative investigations are ordered and abnormal findings are actioned as required.* To maintain effective communication with Consultants, Anaesthetists, laboratory, GP's, nursing colleagues and clerical staff, and provide advice to other multi-disciplinary clinical teams.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will assist the Pre-Assessment Manager/Sisters/Staff Nurses to ensure the Pre-Assessment department is efficiently and effectively managed at all times. Will be responsible and accountable for the delivery of safe and effective care within the pre-assessment environment. Be expected to work autonomously and independently, with effective pre-operative assessment and screening of patients undergoing a variety of elective surgical and interventional procedures, working with senior and junior staff helping to co‑ordinate and deliver high quality standards of nursing care.

Job responsibilities
  • Conduct comprehensive pre‑operative assessments, including detailed patient histories and clinical screening
  • Request and interpret pre‑operative investigations, escalating abnormal results where required
  • Liaise effectively with Consultants, Anaesthetists, and other clinical teams to ensure continuity of care
  • Provide clear and reassuring information to patients and their families to support informed consent
  • Maintain accurate clinical documentation in accordance with NMC standards and Clinic policies
  • Contribute to quality improvement, clinical audits, and ongoing service development initiatives
Skills and Experience
  • Registered Nurse (NMC)
  • Minimum 2 years’ post‑registration experience in a surgical setting
  • Strong understanding of pre‑operative assessment processes and patient pathways
  • Competent in ECG and phlebotomy or willingness to undertake training
  • Excellent clinical judgement and ability to work autonomously
  • Strong communication, organisational and IT skills
  • Commitment to providing safe, evidence‑based, and compassionate care
  • Desirable: Previous experience in pre‑assessment or pre‑operative care and familiarity with interpreting blood results and ECGs.
