Job summary

Valard Construction in Tilbury, Ontario, is seeking Powerline Technician Apprentices (PLT) to join our Distribution group. You will work with Journeypersons to install and inspect electrical distribution facilities, drive line trucks, operate equipment, and gain hours toward Journeyperson certification.

Candidates must be enrolled in the Ontario Apprenticeship program (or Apprentices Level One to Four) and reside locally.

Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled as a Powerline Technician Apprentice with the Ontario Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission.
  • Valid Driver's License and ability to provide an acceptable Drivers Abstract.
  • Knowledge of trade safety practices, procedures and safety requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Work with a Journeyperson Powerline Technician and gain hours towards obtaining Journeyperson Certificate.
  • Climb and work from heights and parallel to energized circuits.
  • Maintain poles, towers and guy wires.
  • Splice, solder and insulate conductors and related wiring to connect power distribution networks.
  • Open and close switches and install grounding devices to lines and equipment.
  • May climb poles and/or ride in bucket to install or repair wires, arms, insulators or other hardware on poles.
  • Install and repair underground facilities such as cable, transformers, potheads and pedestals.
  • Install pole hardware and auxiliary equipment such as transformers, lightning arresters, switches, fuses and insulators, using hand tools and mechanical devices.
  • May cover energized lines with rubber goods to facilitate safe handling of high-voltage lines without interrupting service.
  • Use insulated poles (hot sticks) fitted with mechanically or hydraulically operated grasping and crimping tools and/or rubber gloves and sleeves to perform energized line work.
