Job summary

The City of Saskatoon is seeking qualified personnel to install, maintain and repair transmission, distribution and street lighting systems. You will work under supervision and perform climbing and testing tasks with a focus on safety and reliability.

Applicants should have Grade 12, a Saskatchewan Journeyman Powerline Technician Certificate, a Class 1A Licence and a clean SGI driving abstract. This is a full-time role with a 37.33-hour week and a competitive CAD salary.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 education.
  • Saskatchewan Journeyman Powerline Technician Certificate is required.
  • Valid Saskatchewan Class 1A Driver’s Licence or ability to obtain within 6 months.
  • SGI driving abstract demonstrating a safe driving record.

Responsibilities

  • Install, maintain and repair transmission, distribution and street lighting systems.
  • Climb poles and towers; work from bucket, ladder or platform at various heights.
  • Respond to power interruptions and locate faults as needed.
  • Record load and voltage readings; perform testing with appropriate equipment.
  • Participate in safety and training programs; maintain tools and equipment.

Job description

This position is a IBEW 319 position and will be filled in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Should it not be filled in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement, external candidates will be considered.

Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Operations Superintendent and direction of the Powerline Foreman and URD Foreman, this position installs, maintains and repairs the transmission, distribution and street lighting systems.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Installs, maintains and repairs overhead and underground transmission, distribution and street lighting systems.
  • Installs, maintains and repairs energized and de-energized low voltage and high voltage lines and equipment.
  • Climbs poles, towers or uses aerial bucket, ladder or platform to work at various heights.
  • Installs, inspects, patrols, maintains, repairs, replaces, connects and disconnects various distribution system components such as feeders, poles and pole structures, guys and anchors, line hardware, insulators, arrestors, fuses, cutouts, pole top switches, switching cubicles, pedestals, pole top and padmounted transformers, conductors, cables, splices, taps, terminations, metering tanks, street light poles, fixtures, photocells, relays, capacitors, reclosures and other related materials and equipment.
  • Ensures adherence to proper work procedures, safety standards, construction standards and other specifications.
  • Uses protective equipment such as insulated gloves, line hose, hoods, blankets and hot line tools for work with energized equipment.
  • Installs, replaces and maintains service lines and cables to customers. Responds to reports of customer power interruptions. Locates and repairs faults.
  • Records load and voltage readings with volt-amp meters, maximeters and recorders. Performs tests using phasing equipment, phase rotation tester, megger, ground resistance tester, cable fault equipment and other test devices as they become available.
  • Participates in safety and first aid programs, training of apprentices, tool and equipment inspections and testing.
  • Maintains all tools and equipment pertaining to the trade.
  • Trims trees that interfere with the electrical system.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education, Training and Experience Requirements
  • Grade 12 education.
  • Possession of a Saskatchewan Journeyman Powerline Technician Certificate.
  • Possession of, or ability to successfully complete within 6 months after date of hire, a valid Saskatchewan Class 1A Driver’s Licence.
  • Current driver’s abstract from SGI demonstrating a safe driving record.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills
  • Knowledge of overhead and underground distribution systems and the ability to learn new system developments.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Physical ability to perform the assigned duties, including the ability to climb poles and towers and work outdoors in various weather conditions.

Weekly Hours:37.33

Salary Range:$51.84to$53.39CADper hour (2026rates)
