The Police Service

The City of Grande Prairie received Ministerial Approval to form the Grande Prairie Police Service (GPPS) in March 2023, making it the first municipal police service to be established in Alberta since 1956.

The GPPS is committed to building a modern, professional, ethical, equitable, and locally accountable police service that enhances public safety within our community. Once fully staffed, the GPPS will be a full‑spectrum public safety agency with personnel consisting of police officers, peace officers, outreach workers, and other civilian professionals.

The Opportunity

We are looking for individuals who can help us elevate ourselves to provide high‑quality policing response to support the vibrant growing community of Grande Prairie. The Grande Prairie Police Service (GPPS) is a progressive and community‑focused police service committed to excellence in public safety. We are seeking officers to play a key role in the establishment and growth of our new service.

Required Qualifications
  • A grade 12 high school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum 18 years old
  • Canadian Citizenship or legal permanent resident
  • Alberta Class 5 drivers License or equivalent (Applicants with five demerit points or more are ineligible)
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Good ethical character. Applicants cannot have been involved in any criminal activity (detected and undetected) within a three‑year period from this application date.
  • Health/Physical condition – Please review the self‑assessment document to ensure you qualify. Physical, vision, hearing and other medical tests will be required throughout the process.

This posting will close August 28, 2026, with the new recruit class starting in Q1 of 2027.

Other Information

As a new officer you will be required to complete several steps within the recruitment process. This will include APCAT, APREP, interviews, psychological evaluation, a background investigation, and a polygraph test.

During the process you will be requested to provide the following documents, please start gathering them and submit only when requested.

  • Copy of your drivers licence
  • Drivers abstract issued with 30 days
  • Copy of high school diploma or equivalency
  • Copy of Birth Certificate/ Canadian Citizenship or Permanent Resident documentation
  • Vision testing results
  • Hearing testing results
