Job summary

Fraser Health Authority in British Columbia, Canada, is seeking a skilled journeyman plumber to join our Plant Services team. This role involves hands-on plumbing work, installation, inspection and repair of plumbing and medical gas systems across our facilities.

Reporting to the Manager, Plant Services, you will perform cross-connection control and maintain emergency systems, electrical and mechanical equipment while upholding safety and BC codes.

Qualifications

  • Journeyman Plumber certification or trades qualification recognized by BC.
  • Gas Fitter Class B license with electrical endorsement recognized by BC.
  • Cross Connection Control Specialist certificate issued by AWWA BC Section.

Responsibilities

  • Review work requests with user departments and interpret blueprints to determine materials and labour costs.
  • Prepare for projects by arranging schedules and assembling supplies, tools and equipment.
  • Install, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair plumbing systems, medical gas and natural gas piping, including cross-connection devices.
  • Perform scheduled and demand maintenance on building installations and equipment.
  • Repair plumbing fixtures and maintain domestic water systems and related equipment.
  • Maintain building fabric and perform preventative maintenance documentation and reporting.
  • Ensure readiness of emergency systems and coordinate with consultants and contractors.

Detailed Overview

Reporting to the Manager, Plant Services performs skilled plumbing work at the journeyman level in the testing, installation, alteration and repair of plumbing systems, natural gas piping systems, appliances, equipment and accessories, cross connection and backflow prevention systems. Performs a variety of maintenance and repair functions with respect to scheduled and demand maintenance of plumbing, architectural, electrical and mechanical equipment on buildings and equipment. Performs operational maintenance repair duties related to building systems, emergency power and other related equipment of the facility.

Responsibilities
  • Reviews work requests and consults with user departments regarding specifications and other project requirements, interprets blueprints, drawings and specifications in order to determine the materials and equipment required, calculates materials and labour in estimating cost of projects and makes recommendations as required.
  • Prepares for work projects by arranging work schedule with user departments and assembling supplies, tools and equipment.
  • Installs, troubleshoots, maintains, modifies, monitors, inspects, tests, repairs, replaces pipe and plumbing systems, medical gas systems, natural gas piping systems, appliances, equipment and accessories including, a variety of cross connection control devices such as reduced pressure backflow assemblies, double check valve assemblies, and pressure vacuum breaker assemblies using equipment such as dead weight testers, water columns, mercury manometers and differential gauges in accordance with applicable codes.
  • Performs scheduled and demand maintenance on building installations, electrical and mechanical repairs on buildings, equipment and accessories such as beds, wheelchairs, autoclaves, washers, sterilizers, dryers, prime movers, drive units, electric motors and control valves, seals, bearings, power outlets, light fixtures, fire alarm systems, nurse-call systems, communication systems, sterilizer controls and other related equipment.
  • Performs repairs on plumbing fixtures such as sinks, toilets, water supply lines and waste lines including unplugging of toilets, drains and plaster traps. Maintains and adjusts all domestic water systems and related equipment.
  • Maintains, constructs and repairs building fabric such as walls, roofs, doors and windows, floors, ceilings by framing, applying finishing materials such as drywall, wood paneling and floor covering, plastering, painting and decorating using a variety of paint, plaster and wall coverings.
  • Maintains relative preventative maintenance program inspection reports, records and documentation by logging activities such as preventative and demand work, test results and completes, collates and files documentation in accordance with established standards and procedures.
  • Maintains an inventory of supplies, equipment and tools, completes related reports and records, recommends, purchase of related equipment and supplies.
  • Operates and assures readiness at all times of the building emergency systems such as fire alarm systems and emergency stand-by generators by performing inspections and tests. Takes appropriate action to maintain essential services during power failures and internal or external disasters.
  • Liaises with consultants and contractors, reviews drawings and specifications and assures that drawings and plans are updated when changes are made.
  • Performs emergency removal of snow and ice from entrances, walkways and service driveways for safety of visitors and staff.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and Experience

Certificate of Apprenticeship or Trades Qualification Certificate as a journeyman Plumber, Class B level Gas Fitter's License with an electrical endorsement recognized by the Province of BC. Valid Certificate of Competency as a Cross Connection Control Specialist issued by the American Water Works Association, British Columbia Section.

Two years' recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
