Job description
Job Purpose

The Plant Safety Specialist is responsible for developing, implementing, and auditing all safety, industrial hygiene (IH), and fire prevention programs at the plant. This role provides consultation, advice, and leadership support to ensure that safety, IH, and fire prevention objectives are achieved and that programs are consistently applied across the site. This position reports to the EHS Manager and works closely with plant leadership and frontline supervisors.

Key Responsibilities
  • Promote and model safe work practices and ensure compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Develop, implement, and periodically review safety, industrial hygiene, and fire prevention programs, procedures, and standards.
  • Conduct routine inspections, audits, and risk assessments to identify hazards and recommend corrective actions.
  • Lead or coordinate incident and near‑miss investigations, perform root cause analysis, and track corrective and preventive actions to completion.
  • Coordinate and facilitate the Joint Health and Safety Committee and follow‑up on action items.
  • Deliver safety training and safety talks for all levels of plant personnel.
  • Monitor safety metrics and maintain accurate records related to incidents, inspections, training, and regulatory reporting.
  • Manage contractor safety processes, including prequalification, orientation, and oversight of work activities.
  • Support industrial hygiene activities such as exposure assessments (e.g., noise, dust, chemicals) and fit testing, in collaboration with external providers where necessary.
  • Administer and maintain site fire prevention and emergency response plans, including coordination of drills and participation in emergency response teams.
  • Provide day‑to‑day support and coaching to supervisors and employees to resolve safety issues and strengthen the plant safety culture.
  • Interpret and communicate health, safety, and fire code requirements to plant management and staff.
What do I need to be successful?
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant health and safety experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with safety program implementation, training, and incident investigation.
  • Solid knowledge of applicable occupational health and safety and fire prevention regulations and standards.
  • Familiarity with safety management systems, risk assessment methodologies, and industrial hygiene principles.
  • Strong communication and facilitation skills, with the ability to influence at all levels of the organization.
  • Proficiency with standard office software and safety/incident management systems; ability to analyze data and develop basic safety metrics and reports.
  • Proven ability to lead or coordinate teams, manage multiple priorities, and drive accountability for safety performance.
Education and Credentials
  • Diploma or associate's degree (or equivalent) in Occupational Health & Safety or related field required; bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Professional safety designation such as CRSP, CRST, or CSO preferred.
Work Environment
  • Manufacturing plant environment with exposure to production equipment, varying temperatures and noise.
  • Requires use of appropriate personal protective equipment and regular presence on the plant floor.
