Job summary

Cenovus Energy is seeking a Plant Operator to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation of processing equipment within the designated unit. The role reports to the Coordinator and requires adherence to Cenovus policies, safety standards, and regulatory guidelines.

Ideal candidates hold a 4th Class Power Engineer certificate (3rd/2nd class preferred) and have at least 1 year of SAGD experience, with strong computer skills (Word/Excel/Outlook) and SAP knowledge considered an asset.

Qualifications

  • Legally authorized to work in Canada.
  • Minimum 1 year of SAGD operations experience.
  • Preference for 3rd or 2nd Class Power Engineer certificates.
  • Proficiency with Word, Excel and Outlook; SAP experience is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Perform operational rounds and condition monitoring in the assigned area.
  • Document results via electronic logs and adjust operations as needed.
  • Support maintenance scheduling and follow LOTO procedures.
  • Respond to process upsets or alarms and communicate until resolved.
  • Provide coaching and on‑the‑job training to new staff.

Cenovus is currently recruiting for the Plant Operator position. Reporting to the Coordinator, the Plant Operator is responsible for ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of processing equipment to maintain optimal efficiency within the assigned unit. You will be actively adhering to the Cenovus policies, safety, operating rules, schedule agreements, attendance guidelines, and Government regulations.

While this vacancy is currently at Christina Lake North, this posting could be used to fill vacancies at any of the Oil Sands Operations sites (Christina Lake, Christina Lake North, Foster Creek, or Sunrise, based on business need).

Work Environment

Foster Creek & Christina Lake: This is a full-time employee position working a shift rotation. Foster Creek and Christina Lake has full-service camp facilities. Depending on your place of residence and your shift rotation, bus and/or air transportation to/from site is offered from designated departure points in select locations. Foster Creek is serviced by flight Hubs in Calgary and Edmonton as well as bus transportation to site from La Corey, AB. Christina Lake, Christina Lake North and Sunrise have service flight Hubs in Calgary and Edmonton. Saskatoon will become a service flight hub effective September 1, 2026. There will also be bus transportation to these sites from La Corey, AB / Lac La Biche, AB effective September 1, 2026.

Sunrise: This is a full-time employee position working a shift rotation. Sunrise is located approximately 100 km northeast of the City of Fort McMurray and is a fly in/ fly out remote camp-based position. Cenovus will provide transportation to Sunrise from designated hubs out of Calgary and Edmonton. At the Sunrise site, employees will be provided comfortable camp accommodations and recreational amenities.

What you’ll do
  • Perform operational rounds and conduct condition monitoring, including sampling and testing within the assigned area.
  • Document results through electronic log entries, interpret findings, and make necessary operational adjustments.
  • Support the AWT's maintenance schedule by preparing equipment for planned work and following Cenovus's LOTO procedures.
  • Respond to process upsets or alarms and maintain clear communication with required parties until resolution is achieved.
  • Provide assistance, coaching, on‑job training and assessments to new employees as required.
  • Support Cenovus Safety Culture through Team initiatives such as the frontline audits and inspections, Safety Meetings, and Unit Inspections.
  • Conduct thorough Handover Meetings with outgoing / incoming Plant Operations staff.
  • Collaborate effectively within a team environment, building strong working relationships while also demonstrating the ability to work safely and independently as a motivated self‑starter.
Who you are
  • Legally authorized to work in Canada.
  • Possess a 4th Class Power Engineer Certificate, with preference given to those holding a 3rd or 2nd Class Certificate.
  • Minimum 1 year of relevant experience in SAGD operations.
  • Proficiency with computers is required (experience using Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook, SAP, and a field data capture system would be considered an asset).
  • Strong technical and troubleshooting skills to complement Power Engineering qualifications.

As this position has been identified as safety sensitive, employment of a final candidate selected for this position will be conditional upon successful completion of required pre‑employment medical and alcohol/drug assessments.

For this position you will be required to maintain a Class 5 driver's license, a satisfactory driving record, and adhere to the appropriate Company policies and guidelines. A driver's abstract will be one of the background checks requested in the pre-employment screening for the final candidate.
