Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the Plant Electrical and Instrumentation Engineer supports plant and project operations for the City's Power Plant, focusing on process control systems, electrical compliance, and IT/OT infrastructure. This role ensures electrical and control standards are upheld while collaborating with stakeholders to maintain system integrity. Success requires strong communication skills, attention to detail, adaptability, and the ability to thrive in a fast‑paced environment.

The Plant Electrical and Instrumentation Engineer is an on‑site position located in Medicine Hat, Alberta. Relocation assistance is available for the successful candidate. Your Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain and upgrade the Plant Control Network, ensuring compliance with AESO Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) standards.
  • Manage IT/OT infrastructure, including servers, virtualization, cybersecurity, and data backups.
  • Collaborate on projects involving control system changes and architecture improvements.
  • Analyze process data to identify root causes of failures and implement corrective actions.
  • Ensure hardware/software updates and manage obsolescence for control network components.
  • Prepare engineering work products and manage changes per MOC process.
  • Support AESO Alberta Reliability Standards compliance testing and documentation for 13.8 kV and 69 kV electrical systems.
  • Provide on‑call support for process controls and IT/OT systems.
  • Monitor and respond to cybersecurity vulnerabilities and incidents.
What You Bring
  • Expertise in Microsoft Server Platforms, VMware, Cisco networking, storage/backup systems, and IT/OT security.
  • Strong knowledge of data processing, virtualization, enterprise applications, and server/network administration.
  • Skilled in project management and developing operational standards and procedures.
  • Solid understanding of electrical systems and technical drawings (SLD, schematics, wiring diagrams).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and AutoCAD.
  • Detail‑oriented, adaptable, and effective in fast‑paced environments.
  • Excellent communication, decision‑making, and collaboration skills.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
Qualifications
  • Successful completion of a bachelor’s degree in electrical or electronic engineering from a recognized post‑secondary institution.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of directly related experience as a Professional Engineer in industrial electrical, controls, and information technology.
  • Professional membership, or eligibility for membership, with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA).
  • Possession of a valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record.
  • Certification in Cisco networking and VMware server administration is considered an asset.
  • Previous experience in electrical power generation is considered an asset.
  • A management‑approved combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
