Job summary

City of Chilliwack is seeking a Planner I (Full Time) to assist management in the Planning Department. You will prepare reports on development and long-range planning, respond to inquiries, and provide technical support for planning functions.

The role involves reviewing zoning, permits, and bylaw compliance; site visits; and preparing correspondence. Requires a two-year geography/planning program with relevant experience and a BC driver’s licence. Permanent role with a 49.50/hour rate (2026).

Qualifications

  • Graduate from a two-year post-secondary program in Geography or Planning with 1 year of relevant experience or equivalent
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing; prepare clear technical and non-technical reports
  • Coordinate work with Planning staff and maintain effective relationships
  • Strong organizational skills to multi-task and prioritize under pressure
  • Excellent computer skills with Microsoft Office and knowledge of land tracking software
  • Knowledge of government agencies and legislation related to planning
  • Competent in mapping and graphics as applied to planning
  • Read and interpret development plans and site plans
  • Interact with applicants and the public in a tactful, courteous manner
  • Possess or obtain a valid BC Driver's Licence

Planner I (Full Time)
Duties

The incumbent in this class assists management to achieve efficient operation within the Planning Department through reliable performance in technical work, field and office work of planning requirements and observing safety and security practices of confidential planning material and municipal policies.

Nature And Scope Of Work

The incumbent, under direction, will be responsible for preparing reports on development and long range planning matters, responding to general enquiries related to development and planning matters, and providing technical support for planning functions. The incumbent will conduct reviews for zoning, development permits, building permits, business licences, and other City regulations and policies, including the preparation of basic correspondence and conducting bylaw compliance and site visits. The incumbent will work under general supervision, performing other related duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

The incumbent in this class will normally work the standard work week of Monday to Friday within the hours specified and on occasion work overtime as authorized. The incumbent may be required to travel in the performance of duties. The incumbent, upon hiring, will have union dues deducted from source in accordance with the Collective Agreement.

Education: Must be a graduate from a two (2) year post-secondary program in Geography or Planning and one (1) year of relevant experience - OR - an equivalent combination of related education and experience;

  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing, including preparing clear and concise technical and non- technical reports;
  • Ability to coordinate work with staff in the Planning Department, and establish and maintain effective working relationships;
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to organize work processes efficiently, multi-task, and prioritize work under pressure, and maintain a high degree of accuracy;
  • Excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office, and knowledge of land or property tracking software;
  • Knowledge of various government agencies and legislation as they pertain to planning;
  • Competent in mapping and graphics as applied to planning;
  • Ability to read and interpret development plans, site plans, and understand their specifications;
  • Ability to deal effectively with applicants and the public in a tactful, courteous, and diplomatic manner;
  • Must be in possession of or able to obtain a valid B.C. Driver's Licence.
