At Standard Machine we design and manufacture high-quality parts for critical industries including pulp and paper, mining, oil and gas, chemical processing plants, steel mills, marine applications, transportation, military, and aerospace.

Reporting to the Planning and Inside Sales Manager, Planner/Estimator’s complete cost‑effective estimating and planning of jobs, including purchasing materials, to meet customer requirements, company manufacturing capabilities and company cost targets.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provision of accurate, timely, cost effective and efficient planning of manufactured parts.
    • Streamline the processes of planning to minimize manufacturing time and costs through efficient process selection, workflow, tooling specification, and any other critical requirements.
    • Provide accurate estimation of operation times to enhance shop scheduling and workflow.
    • Obtain and provide clear and concise communication of customer, design, and manufacturing specifications and requirements to convey required info and reduce the possibility of errors.
    • Co‑ordinate with materials department to ensure timely and cost‑effective purchasing of materials to meet customer delivery and company WIP cost targets.
    • Issue Job Travellers to production to meet customer documentation requirements.
  • Ensure efficient, accurate and timely estimation of jobs.
    • Estimate to minimize lead times for Sales and maximize the accuracy of job costs and profit margins.
    • Provide timely interpretation of customer requirements rendered into accurate estimates and quotes.
    • Liaise with customer service to ensure customer product and delivery requirements are addressed and, when necessary, alternatives presented.
  • Assist Operations in the development of efficient manufacturing and repair processes.
    • Improve planning efficiency through the development of and maintenance of templates, BOM’s, manufacturing methods.
    • Reduce length of production delays by assisting in the trouble shooting of problems on the shop floor.
    • Improve production efficiencies through the development of production procedures.
Qualifications

Our ideal candidate possesses the following education and competencies.

Education
  • Journeyman or 10+ years’ experience as a Machinist, Industrial Mechanic, or Welder.

Minimum 5+ years direct trade experience, preferably in a custom manufacturing environment.

  • 5+ years in previous customer service or planning role will be considered an asset.
  • Understanding of machining including boring mills, lathes, hobbers, slotters, grinders, etc.
  • Mechanical aptitude and understanding of gearing, gear boxes, and related operations
  • General knowledge of welding, heat treat, industrial painting, and material handling
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills including conflict resolution skills
  • Deadline‑oriented and strong attention to detail
  • Accurate task completion with ability review and check own work
  • Strong organizational and project planning ability
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite including Word and Excel
  • Proficiency with Epicor or comparable ERP system
