Job description
Our client, a major resource development organization, is seeking a Piping Superintendent to support the construction and delivery of a major mine infrastructure expansion project in British Columbia.
This role offers the opportunity to lead the installation of critical process, utility, water management, and materials handling piping systems while working closely with contractors, engineering teams, quality personnel, and commissioning stakeholders. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring construction activities are executed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project specifications, quality requirements, and schedule objectives.
Candidates with experience as Piping Superintendents, Pipe Superintendents, SMP Superintendents, Mechanical Superintendents, Construction Superintendents, Senior Piping Supervisors, or Construction Supervisors on major mining, industrial, infrastructure, energy, or processing projects are encouraged to apply.
Work Arrangement & Travel Requirements
- Site-based position located at a major mining operation in British Columbia.
- Rotational schedule required.
- Camp accommodations and travel support provided in accordance with project policies.
- Regular interaction with contractors, engineering teams, operations personnel, and commissioning stakeholders.
- Work will be performed in a remote construction environment and may include exposure to varying weather conditions.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide leadership and oversight for field piping construction activities while promoting a strong safety-first culture.
- Lead daily safety meetings, hazard assessments, toolbox talks, and safe work planning activities.
- Ensure compliance with health, safety, environmental, and project-specific requirements.
- Oversee installation of a variety of piping systems, including:
- Process piping
- HDPE piping systems
- Carbon steel piping
- Stainless steel piping
- Water distribution systems
- Slurry and tailings pipelines
- Fire water systems
- Compressed air systems
- Utility piping systems
- Coordinate contractor activities, work fronts, labor resources, equipment requirements, and construction sequencing to support project schedules.
- Verify work is completed in accordance with approved engineering drawings, specifications, applicable codes, and quality standards.
- Monitor construction progress and identify opportunities to improve productivity and schedule performance.
- Review inspection and test plans (ITPs) and ensure quality hold points and witness points are properly managed.
- Coordinate hydrotesting, flushing, cleaning, and pre-commissioning activities.
- Support weld inspection programs, turnover documentation, and quality assurance requirements.
- Participate in look-ahead planning, construction coordination meetings, and progress reviews.
- Collaborate with civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, engineering, and commissioning teams to resolve field issues and construction interfaces.
- Support contractor performance monitoring, change management activities, and field reporting requirements.
- Assist with system completion, punch list management, commissioning readiness reviews, and successful handover to operations.
Qualifications
- Journeyperson Pipefitter Certification preferred.
- Mechanical Engineering Technology diploma or related technical education considered an asset.
- Minimum 10 years of industrial construction experience.
- Minimum 5 years of leadership experience overseeing piping installation activities.
- Experience supporting large-scale mining, industrial, infrastructure, energy, or heavy industrial projects.
- Strong understanding of piping installation methodologies, welding practices, hydrotesting, and commissioning activities.
- Knowledge of applicable codes and standards including ASME B31.1, ASME B31.3, and relevant CSA standards.
- Ability to interpret:
- P&IDs
- Isometrics
- General arrangement drawings
- Mechanical specifications
- Construction work packages
- Strong contractor management, communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively across construction, engineering, quality, commissioning, and operations teams.
Preferred Experience
- Mining process plant construction experience.
- Experience with slurry systems, water management infrastructure, pump stations, process utilities, and pipeline installations.
- Exposure to material handling systems, mineral processing facilities, and surface infrastructure projects.
- EPCM project experience with multiple contractor interfaces.
- Commissioning, startup, and operational readiness experience.
- Remote or northern site construction experience.
- Demonstrated success delivering work safely while maintaining schedule and quality objectives.
