Equinox Engineering Ltd. is a Calgary-based EPCM firm and market leader in oil and gas processing. We specialize in facilities design, implementation, and operational assistance for natural gas, conventional oil, heavy oil, and carbon capture projects. Our clients include several of the largest oil and gas producers in Canada and worldwide, and we are currently executing a wide range of sweet gas, sour gas, conventional oil, and heavy oil facility and pipeline projects.

Summary

The Intermediate Piping Engineer provides technical support in the design and execution of piping systems within multidiscipline project teams. This role involves preparing engineering deliverables, ensuring compliance with applicable codes and standards, and coordinating with other disciplines to achieve project objectives. The Intermediate Piping Engineer works closely with senior engineers and designers to deliver safe, cost-effective, and high-quality designs for oil and gas facilities and pipelines.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare and review piping engineering deliverables such as specifications, line designation tables, material requisitions, and specialty item data sheets.
  • Support the development of project documentation, including design basis memorandums (DBMs), scopes of work, and execution plans.
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable codes, standards, and client requirements.
  • Collaborate closely with the Piping Design and Drafting team to ensure accurate and efficient design execution.
  • Participate in model reviews (30%, 60%, and 90%) and contribute to the identification of design optimizations.
  • Coordinate with other engineering disciplines, including Mechanical, Process, Structural, and Project Management.
  • Provide input to material selection and ensure appropriate specifications for pressure, temperature, and corrosion resistance.
  • Assist in resolving technical issues during design, fabrication, and construction phases.
  • Participate in field reviews, as-building, and resolution of site queries (RFIs) as required.
  • Support stress analysis activities and ensure proper integration with piping layouts.
  • Demonstrate commitment to Equinox’s Health and Safety Program and adherence to company procedures.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of departmental standards and procedures.
Key Skills & Abilities
  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Solid understanding of piping design, materials selection, and fabrication practices.
  • Working knowledge of relevant design codes such as ASME B31.3, B31.1, B31.4, and B31.8.
  • Familiarity with CSA Z662 above ground piping design.
  • Experience with pressure piping design and provincial regulatory requirements (ABSA, TSASK, TSBC).
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary and global teams.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with 3D modeling and CAD software tools (e.g., AutoCAD, SmartPlant, CADWorx) considered an asset.
  • Exposure to oil and gas facilities design, including gas plants, heavy oil facilities, and pipelines.
Education & Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Metallurgical Engineering.
  • Registered or eligible for registration as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with APEGA.
  • Minimum 5–10 years of oil and gas experience, including recent EPCM experience focused on piping or mechanical engineering.
  • Field experience and exposure to fabrication or construction activities considered an asset.
