Job description

Calian is proud to continue a long-standing contractual relationship with the Department of National Defence (DND) to provide healthcare services to the Canadian Armed Forces. Through the Health Care Provider Contract, Calian employs health care professionals across Canada who are integral to supporting the health and wellbeing of our military members.

Position Overview

Calian is looking to hire a Physiotherapy Assistant to work at CFB Edmonton.

Physiotherapy Assistants on this contract benefit from treating clients who are generally very fit and motivated towards their recovery. Ample time is provided to assess and treat clients with no more than 2 patients per hour and time for charting. Specific and standardized work requirements for members allow for easy development of SMART goals for return to duty.

Responsibilities
  • Assist with the treatment of a variety of musculoskeletal, neurological, and respiratory conditions in physiotherapy patients in accordance with the physiotherapy treatment plan provided by the physiotherapist;
  • Provide education and monitoring of the patient’s performance of therapeutic exercises, apply ultrasound therapy, and assist with patient transfers, as directed by physiotherapist;
  • Communicate any changes or unusual findings in patient’s condition, such as increased pain levels, decreased function or any other physical responses that deviate from those expected, to the Physiotherapist before proceeding or continuing with any assigned treatments or interventions;
  • Document each client visit under their responsibility, including observations, findings and interventions in CFHIS and patient health records;
  • Assist with the fitting and use of basic orthopaedic equipment such as crutches, canes, splints, slings, supports and non-complex devices, as indicated by Physiotherapist assessment or prescribed by Medical Officer; and assist with related education and ambulation training;
  • Assist with the management of disposable supplies and stock by identifying and communicating deficiencies in inventory to the physiotherapist and tracking shipping, arrivals, ordering, and invoices; Complete physiotherapy section daily routines such as infection control procedures, routine equipment cleaning (including ultrasound heads) and equipment organization and maintenance for the safety of patients and staff;
  • Track and record section work activities in the physiotherapy workload measurement system;
  • Other associated tasks relevant to this occupational group.
Qualifications
  • Completed a college-level education program for physiotherapy support personnel accredited by the Occupational Therapist Assistant and Physiotherapist Assistant Education Program or a Bachelor Degree in Kinesiology or Human Kinetics; or
  • A current licence in good standing as a Physiotherapy Assistant (thérapeute en réadaptions physique) from the Ordre professionnel de la physiothérapie du Québec (OPPQ); or
  • On the job training as physiotherapy support personnel with direct physiotherapy assistant work experience of at least 2 years within a military physiotherapy setting
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience working in an orthopaedic physiotherapy clinic. (Note: time worked within a military physiotherapy setting may be counted for this requirement)
