What We Look For In a Phonics Tutor

• Advanced Subject Mastery: Deep knowledge of letter-sound correspondence, phonemic awareness, blending and segmenting, digraphs, diphthongs, vowel teams, r‑controlled vowels, syllable types, and decoding strategies. Ability to explain the alphabetic principle, phoneme manipulation, and systematic phonics progressions while preparing beginning readers for fluent, independent reading and spelling development.
• Conceptual Teaching & Problem‑Solving: Skilled at teaching sound‑symbol relationships, blending skills, and word attack strategies through systematic, explicit instruction. Guides students through isolating phonemes, blending consonant clusters, decoding multisyllabic words, and applying phonics rules to spelling. Emphasizes multisensory techniques including visual, auditory, and kinesthetic approaches and connects phonics instruction to meaningful reading and writing activities.
• Curriculum Awareness & Adaptive Instruction: Familiar with systematic phonics programs and science of reading research, and common challenges such as vowel pattern confusion, consonant blend difficulties, and transferring decoding skills to connected text. Adapts instruction using decodable readers, word sorting activities, and multisensory letter formation practice to support emergent and struggling readers from pre‑kindergarten through elementary levels.
• Effective Teaching Methods: Ability to identify concepts students commonly struggle with, explain material using multiple approaches, and adapt instruction to meet individual learning needs and styles.
• Strong communication skills and a friendly, engaging teaching style.
• Ability to adapt to different learning styles and student needs.
