Overview
The Pharmacy Assistant assists the Pharmacist in the technical aspects of prescription filling and administrative duties in order to increase the Pharmacist's opportunity to provide patient care. The Pharmacy Assistant participates in all aspects of Pharmacy Operations required of a team player and is a key member in delivering superior customer service.
Responsibilities
- Receiving prescriptions from patients, following provincial legal/regulatory conditions and assessing the prescription for completeness (name, address, date of birth, allergies, 3rd party information, any special requests, prescriber, generic/brand, prioritizing prescriptions with 21st Century Guidelines).
- Performing computer functions as directed by the Pharmacist (data entry, price check, patient information entry/update, interpretation and processing of written prescriptions including Latin abbreviations, drug name recognition, dosage calculations, refills, report generation, patient profile checks).
- Filling prescriptions under the Pharmacist’s supervision, selecting appropriate products, performing the accuracy program (7 point, visual and DIN checks), selecting and counting/measuring and preparing products, labeling and organizing for pharmacist checking, obtaining necessary approvals for verbal refills where authorized, utilizing STOP forms if applicable, and facilitating all aspects of Cognitive Services.
- Maintaining inventory control, assisting the Pharmacist in maintaining stock levels, checking for and pulling expired medications monthly, clearing Will Call bin of stale prescriptions, writing up returns, ordering drugs and supplies, using preferred wholesalers when possible, operating telephone/paging equipment, pricing and putting away pharmacy orders, organizing shelves, handling opened bottles, and maintaining knowledge of interchangeable drugs and consistent selection of key brands/preferred generics.
- General housekeeping, stocking dispensing supplies, keeping the dispensary clean and organized, maintaining a clean and safe work environment as part of the team (e.g., dishes, garbage) and maintaining/cleaning packaging and dispensing equipment, computer, fax machine, etc.
- Clerical organization, filing prescriptions, invoices, reports, correspondence and memos, and completing administrative support functions (e.g., journals, accounts receivable, aged trial balance).
- Assisting with OTC operations such as ordering, stocking, and cashier duties as assigned by the OTC Manager and/or Pharmacist.
The pay range for this position is $17.60 - $23.10/hr. Rate of pay will be determined based on relevant experience.
