Job summary

A cancer diagnostics company in Newfoundland and Labrador is seeking a Per Diem Histotechnologist responsible for performing histological preparation of tissue specimens, including embedding, sectioning, and staining. Job description

SAGA Diagnostics is a personalized cancer diagnostics and disease monitoring company focused on molecular genetic analysis of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA). Position Summary

The Per Diem Histotechnologist is responsible for performing all aspects of histological preparation of tissue specimens for microscopic examination and diagnosis. This includes embedding, sectioning, staining, and cover-slipping of tissue samples. The Histotech may also work alongside the pathologist during digital path review. The Histotech ensures the highest quality of tissue processing and slide preparation in accordance with established laboratory procedures and safety regulations.

Responsibilities
  • Perform routine procedures, including embedding, microtomy, staining (H&E only), and coverslipping.
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot histology laboratory instruments and equipment.
  • Ensure accurate specimen labeling, documentation, and quality control according to lab policies.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment compliant with CLIA, CAP, and OSHA standards.
  • Collaborate with pathologists and other laboratory staff to ensure timely and accurate results.
  • Participate in proficiency testing and continuing education as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Laboratory Supervisor or Director.
Education & Certification
  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in a laboratory science or related field.
  • Certification as an HT (Histotechnician) or HTL (Histotechnologist) by ASCP preferred.
Experience
  • Minimum 1–2 years of histology laboratory experience preferred.
  • Experience in embedding, sectioning, and staining human tissue.
Skills & Competencies
  • Strong attention to detail and manual dexterity.
  • Ability to work independently and manage time efficiently.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Flexibility to work variable hours, including early mornings or weekends if needed.
  • This role will be approximately 5 to 10 hours a month on an as need basis.
