Qualifications

  • 4 years progressively increasing responsibility in payroll processing in a higher education institution or similar organization.
  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP).
Primary Responsibilities

As a Payroll Specialist at Sul Ross State University (SRSU), you will perform daily payroll activities for students, exempt, and non-exempt personnel to ensure compliance with Texas State University System (TSUS) policies, University Payroll Policies, and FLSA rules. Your duties include payroll processing, reporting, benefits coordination, and other tasks as required.

  • Complete payroll processes, verify timesheets, calculate deductions, and submit direct deposit files. (40%)
  • Generate payroll reports for internal use and external vendors; assist with IRS reporting. (15%)
  • Submit payroll liability payments and refunds for retirement programs, wage garnishments, and other deductions. (15%)
  • Review new hire benefits and benefit changes, including retirement and insurance. (15%)
  • Data entry of payroll and employee information into Banner and Uniform Statewide Accounting System (USAS). (10%)
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Payroll Director. (5%)
Physical Requirements

Office environment; prolonged sitting at a desk with computer use; frequent use of hands for keyboard and mouse; visual acuity essential; clear verbal communication required; occasional mobility and travel to off‑site meetings and training.

Job Conditions

Office environment, 40‑hour workweek; additional hours and travel may be required during peak periods. Security‑sensitive position subject to Texas Education Code §51.215.
