Job summary

A social services agency in Kitchener is seeking a Part-Time / Relief Youth Support Worker to assist at-risk youth, providing support and crisis intervention. POSITION DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE : Part-Time / Relief Youth Support Worker

Tentative hours: Hours will vary. Required to be able to work the following: Overnight (wake) shifts, afternoon and day shifts, weekends, holidays, on call and short notice availability.

Job Type: Part Time Permanent

Salary: $18.47 per hour

oneROOF Youth Services is a multi-service agency for youth (12-25) experiencing or at-risk of homelessness in the Waterloo Region. Our services include meeting basic needs, outreach, street to housing support services, family reconnect support, mental health and addictions support/services, providing harm reduction supplies, daytime services, food hampers, and emergency shelter.

Summary of Services this position will support
Day Time Services (DTS)

Daytime services operate by appointment during the day and evenings. DTS meets youths basic needs by providing food, hygiene products, locker access, laundry and shower access, medical care and crisis support. It also includes one-on-one support, life skills training, substance use and prevention programming and referral support.

Providing A Roof (PAR) Emergency Shelter

Our PAR Emergency Shelter is an 18-bed emergency co-ed shelter for youth aged 16-25 years. Staff assign available beds to youth on a first-come first-served basis. All youth residing at PAR set short/long-term goals.

Next Steps Housing

Next Steps Housing is a supportive housing building run by oneROOF Youth Services. This youth-specific living and learning environment strives to guide its tenants into their own self-actualization and independent living. There are 44 units and the building has controlled access and visitor registration.

Job Skills Duties & Responsibilities :
  • Availability to work shifts on short notice
  • Must be available to work different shifts including overnights
  • Collaboration: establish collaborative relationships with clients working to increase their strengths
  • Safely resolve crises and respond non-judgmentally to problematic behaviours
  • Demonstrate understanding of oppression and marginalization
  • Make positive contributions to the team support and back up your co-workers
  • Knowledge of concurrent disorders including mental health diagnosis, treatment and resources; and addictions resources stages of change
  • Support community integration and the self-efficacy of tenants
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Supervision of the youth obtaining services at oneROOF Youth Services
  • Maintain the health and safety of clients and staff
  • Participate in training and staff meetings as directed by management
  • Clean youth bed areas and shared areas as required
  • Housekeeping tasks as assigned by the Manager
  • Conduct intakes and discharges as needed
  • Assess needs of clients help and / or make referrals to various community resources when appropriate
  • Educating clients about the community support available
  • Supportive listening and assisting the youth with solving problems as requested
  • Ongoing support for clients and their goals
  • Document pertinent information and enter data
  • Basic understanding of individual systemic and structural facets of homelessness
  • Crisis intervention skills
  • Effective verbal and written skills
  • Awareness & support of a harm reduction approach and provide harm reduction supplies as needed
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Computer literacy
  • Other duties as required
Educational and Employment assets / requirements
  • A diploma in Community Social Services or education in mental health addictions concurrent disorders and social work
  • One year of recent related work experience with an emphasis on mental health addictions homelessness and / or social services
  • Or an equivalent combination of education training and experience. We look at the whole person
  • Must have a valid First Aid and CPR certification
  • Must produce a recent Vulnerable Sector and Criminal Record Check
  • New hires will participate in on-the-job (shadow shift) training.
