St. Lawrence College is currently seeking qualified Professors on a part-time basis with experience and expertise in the Communicative Disorders Assistants program.
We are seeking an individual experienced in teaching the following course within the Communicative Disorders Assistants program:
The focus of this course is on acquired neurogenic language disorders. The course begins with a brief survey of the basic neuro‑anatomy involved in normal language function (production and comprehension). The primary focus of the course is on aphasia and the profile of language disorders that occur after stroke and acquired brain injury. This course explores typical and atypical language and cognitive changes that occur in the aging adult population, including supportive strategies for people living with dementia. Students learn the concepts and practical aspects involved in language and cognitive‑communication screening and intervention. Acquired motor speech disorders and an overview of basic anatomical structures and processes is provided. Intervention principles and strategies for dysarthria and apraxia of speech are explored along with a brief introduction to the role of the CDA in the area of dysphagia. The psychosocial impact of neurogenic language disorders and its effect on the client, their family, and community will be explored.
Focuses on language disorders associated with other diagnoses in preschool and school‑age populations. This course will cover a range of intervention approaches for language disorders and associated learning barriers seen in children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, developmental disabilities, and hearing impairment. Language based learning disabilities and interventions aimed at literacy development in the school‑age population will be examined. The role of the Communicative Disorders Assistant will be emphasized throughout.
These positions will primarily be located at the Kingston Campus for in‑person; however, occasional travel to support programs on other campuses may be requested. Candidates may be required to teach from an online/alternate delivery format on occasion. Candidates must be available to teach Monday through Friday, between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.
Education / Certification / Designation:
Candidates who do not meet the education specified but who possess a relevant and acceptable combination of education, training, and a depth of industry experience may be considered.
Candidates seeking faculty positions with the College will be required to demonstrate the ability to design, facilitate and assess learning in accordance with adult learning principles and universal design in learning (UDL). An ongoing commitment to professional learning will be expected.
Successful candidates are expected to have their own computer, reliable internet connection, and the ability to teach remotely or on Campus, as may be required. The use of virtual meetings through video conferencing software will be required in this role. Professors are also expected to possess or develop proficiency in the use of a Learning Management Software (LMS) to a degree that meets academic standards.
All Professors will be provided with support by the School of Contemporary Teaching and Learning in their onboarding and orientation to teach at St. Lawrence College. Support and coaching is provided to new faculty to provide a a strong theoretical foundation of teaching and learning, and to orient them to the teaching tools and strategies required for teaching in a contemporary and modern learning institution.
