Job summary

Region of Durham is seeking a Primary Care Paramedic to respond to emergencies and provide pre-hospital medical care in Durham Region, Ontario. The incumbent will operate ambulances, collect patient information, and ensure continuity of care across facilities.

Qualifications

  • OSS GD or equivalent diploma required.
  • Post-secondary diploma in Ambulance and Emergency Care or Paramedic Studies.
  • Provincial certification as an AEMCA.
  • Base Hospital certification as a Primary Care Paramedic.
  • Knowledge of Ambulance Act and related health regulations.
  • Practical knowledge of BLS/ALS standards.
  • Immunization, driving record, and clear criminal record.
  • OPPAT certificate required.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to service requests as assigned by CACC.
  • Administer out-of-hospital medical care and transport.
  • Operate paramedic emergency response vehicles per policy.
  • Maintain patient care records and transfer of care.
  • Inspect vehicles and equipment; report deficiencies.
  • Maintain stations and stock medical supplies.

Primary Care Paramedic

The Health Department has an opportunity for individuals to fill the positions of Primary Care Paramedic. The incumbents will:

  • Receive and respond to requests for service as assigned by the Central Ambulance Communications Centre (CACC)
  • Administer effective out of hospital medical care and transportation to ill or injured patients in accordance with ALS/BLS Patient Care Standards
  • Operate paramedic emergency response vehicles, in accordance with legislation and policy, providing timely and safe response to requests for paramedic service and transportation of ill and/or injured patients to appropriate medical facilities
  • Collect relevant patient care information, maintain accurate patient care records including associated documentation and ensure transfer/continuity of medical care
  • Maintain cleanliness, sanitation and ensure proper working order of vehicles and equipment by inspecting and reporting any necessary deficiencies, replacing malfunctioning equipment and supplies
  • Maintain the cleanliness of paramedic response stations; stocks medical supplies and equipment as required

The successful applicants will possess:

  • Ontario Secondary School Graduation Diploma (OSSGD) or equivalent
  • Post-secondary diploma in Ambulance and Emergency Care or Paramedic Studies from a College of Applied Arts and Technology (Ontario)
  • Provincial certification as an Advanced Emergency Medical Care Assistant (AEMCA)
  • Certification from a Base Hospital as a Primary Care Paramedic (including symptom relief drug administration and semi- automatic external defibrillation)
  • Knowledge of applicable legislation, Regional Policies and Procedures, i.e. Ambulance Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Ministry of Health and Long-term Care regulations and standards, Base Hospital policies, procedures, standards and medical directives
  • Practical knowledge of current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS) Patient Care Standards
  • Complete and up-to-date record of immunization, driver's abstract and criminal record search
  • The ability to communicate clearly and respectfully, both written and verbally, with individuals from diverse backgrounds
  • Sound judgement and assessment skills, coupled with the ability to interpret and analyze patient presentation while working in a stressful environment
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team
  • Valid Ontario Class 'F' Driver's Licence and CPR certificate
  • Ottawa Paramedic Physical Ability Test (OPPAT) certificate acquired less than 6 months prior to start date

Additionally, applicants will meet all the requirements of the Ambulance Act and Regulations.

CUPE 1764 Salary Grade 7

This position is with Salary Grade 7 and will be paid at the following hourly rates:

  • Start: $48.53 - Six Month: $51.22 - Job: $53.92
