Parks Coordinator

(Replacement Temporary Full-Time - Approximately 12-18 months)

Located on the traditional, ancestral and unceded lands of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations, West Vancouver is a vibrant community on the North Shore and home to parks, beaches, and sports, recreation and arts amenities. The West Vancouver Parks Department has an opening for a Replacement Temporary Full-Time Parks Coordinator. Reporting to the Parks Maintenance Manager, this position is responsible for the supervision of Parks staff performing duties including Waste, Litter and Recycling, Parks Services, Invasive Species Management, Stewardship Groups, Turf Care, the Park Ranger Program and other maintenance functions.

Key Accountabilities include:

  • Effective staff supervision of crews engaged in the maintenance of a municipal parks system, ensuring work is completed in the most efficient manner possible;
  • Under the direction of the Maintenance Manager, overseeing the planning, development and implementation of the operations and maintenance functions associated with the Parks Department;
  • Conducting inspections of parks to ensure that operations, maintenance and projects conform to schedules, budgets and safety regulations;
  • Working closely and effectively with contractors, agencies, groups and other departments on various parks projects and initiatives;
  • Hiring and onboarding Temporary Full-Time Seasonal Staff;
  • Providing high levels of customer service including following up on maintenance concerns, assigning responsibility and coordinating effective remedial actions;
  • Assisting in developing standards for maintenance and operational procedures;
  • Providing input on policy and “best practices” development;
  • Maintaining organization and inventory levels of equipment, supplies and infrastructure; and
  • Other related duties as required.

The preferred candidate will possess: exceptional communication and leadership capabilities including proven experience providing vision, guidance and supervision support to a team; effective and tactful skills for managing staff and responding to community concerns; ability to manage service delivery of multiple crews; demonstrated experience in leading, coaching, and promoting a team spirit of cooperation and innovation; considerable knowledge of principles, practices, equipment, and safety regulations applicable to the work of the Parks Department; considerable knowledge and experience in parks maintenance and its multiple disciplines; strong budgeting skills; experience leading projects; team player attributes; and successful experience in analysis, planning and strategy development.

The ideal candidate has completed: a university degree in parks and outdoor recreation, environmental science, park management, leadership or related disciplines; accredited courses in leadership studies; and considerable related experience in parks operations, supervisory experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Successful candidates will be required to submit an acceptable Driver’s Abstract from ICBC, a police information check, and a copy of their credentials.

Position Status: Union (WVMEA) – Replacement Temporary, Full‑Time

Hours of Work: 37.5 hours per week (hours and days of work may vary and include one weekend day)

Starting Rate of Pay: $45.32 per hour plus 14% in lieu of benefits (this position has a pay structure with five steps which increase annually).
