Description

TheParish Nursewill promote YPBC as a place of faith, healing, and community. As a member of the ministerial team, the YPBC Parish Nurse will provide confidential, holistic health support that integrates spiritual, physical, and mental well-being within a Christian, faith-based community.

Overview of Church and Community

Yorkminster Park Baptist Church is a historic and vibrant congregation in midtown Toronto, known for its inspiring worship, outstanding music, and deep commitment to compassionate outreach. Grounded in the Christian faith, YPBC offers a welcoming place for people to grow spiritually, experience fellowship, and care for one another through every season of life.

Qualifications and Education Requirements
  • Registered Nurse in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario, with a minimum of 5 years nursing experience
  • Community nursing or teaching experience an asset
  • Professional liability insurance is required
  • Certificate or courses in Parish Nursing required (or willingness to obtain Parish Nursing certification)
  • Well-grounded in personal faith and spiritually mature
  • Demonstrates ability to walk with those who suffer
  • Must be able to work effectively with diverse groups of people
  • Strong ability to work independently
  • Must be able to work effectively with a volunteer board or committee
  • Knowledge of community resources
  • Experienced in liaison and linking of individuals to resources
  • Demonstrated teaching ability
Role and Responsibilities

(i) Health Counsellor: provide individual and family counselling regarding issues related to health and the response to change and loss. This includes home visits and visits to hospitals and long-term care homes in collaboration with the Minister of Pastoral Care.

(ii) Referral Agent: link individuals and families to appropriate community resources and evaluates the outcome of the linkage/referral; assists individuals to navigate the complex world of health and social services.

(iii) Health Advocate: assist individuals to represent their needs as appropriate. This may involve advocacy on a communal level such as participating in the development of programs for vulnerable populations.

(iv) Health Educator: design, deliver and evaluate appropriate health promotion educational sessions/activities based on assessed need.

(v) Support Groups: arrange or develop support groups in partnership with ministerial staff, church groups and community agencies; facilitate access to support groups for individuals.

(vi) Integrates Faith and Health: develop programs and approaches considering the nature of health, illness, suffering or loss in the context of Christian faith. The Parish Nurse integrates health seeking and faith seeking.

(vii) First Aid and Emergency Response: responsible for the oversight of first aid kits, first aid training and training in the use of defibrillator for designated staff and volunteers; review and update pandemic plan as necessary.

(viii) Community Partnerships: Maintains and develops community partnerships.

(ix) Reporting: meets regularly with members of the ministerial team and the Health and Wellness Committee.

(x) Records: maintains client records in accordance with documentation standards of the College of Nurses of Ontario.

Accountability: The Parish Nurse co-operates with the ministerial team, reporting to the Minister of Pastoral Care, the Pastoral Care Committee and works under the direction and with the support of the Health and Wellness Committee of the Board of Deacons.
