Job summary

A municipal government is seeking an Outside Summer Student to perform grounds maintenance, assist in parks operations, and support special events in Richmond Hill. Candidates must be enrolled as full-time students returning to school in the fall, possess good interpersonal skills, understand instructions, and work outdoors in all conditions. A valid Ontario Class 'G' Driver’s License is required. This role is ideal for enthusiastic students looking to gain practical experience in a municipal setting.

Responsibilities

Position Summary

Reporting to the Supervisors of Public Works Operations, the Outside Summer Student will be responsible for the following:

Key Duties and Responsibilities
  • Parks:

    • Grounds maintenance, including litter collection, mowing, and trimming/edging
    • Sports field maintenance, including line marking, turf cutting, and minor repairs to field amenities and equipment (e.g., goals, benches, fences, dugouts, etc.)
    • Assist staff in the inspection, cleaning and repair of multiple park amenities e.g. playgrounds, splash pads and picnic shelters
    • Horticultural maintenance: including planting, weeding and maintenance of annual, perennial and shrub beds along with other horticultural displays
    • Operate various hand tools and powered equipment, including a pickup truck
    • Arboriculture operations including small and large tree care
    • Other duties as assigned
  • Energy and Waste

    • Litter picking and planned garbage/recycling collection and disposal in parks
    • Providing support for special events includingdelivery, set up, takedown, clean-up
    • Other duties as assigned
  • Water/Roads

    • Water Department- Traffic Control, Data Collection, Painting Fire Hydrants, Cleaning and maintenance
    • Assist staff in the inspection, cleaning and repair road and water infrastructure
    • Other duties as assigned
Education and Experience
  • Be currently enrolled in a college or university as afull-time student and returning to school full time for the fall semester
Required Skills/Knowledge
  • Demonstrate the City’s corporate values of care, collaboration, courage and service
  • Previous experience working in a municipal setting outdoors would be considered an asset
  • Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions
  • Good interpersonal skills, with the ability to work in a team environment
  • Ability to deal with the public courteously and effectively
  • Must possess Green Patch CSA approved 8" safety boots
  • Ontario Class "G" Driver’s License in good standing and must provide a satisfactory current Drivers Abstract from the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO)
  • Ontario Class "G2" Driver's License may be considered
  • Be able to work outdoors during all weather conditions and available to work7 days a week including holidays
