Alberta Health Services is seeking an Ophthalmic Medical Technologist (OMT) to perform advanced eye function measurements and ancillary tests to assist ophthalmologists in diagnosing and treating eye disorders.
You will conduct adult and pediatric vision screenings, retinoscopy, refraction, keratometry, corneal topography, and various imaging tests, while contributing to education and research within the Eye Institute of Alberta.
The Ophthalmic Medical Technologist (OMT) performs advanced-level eye function measurements and ancillary tests to assist ophthalmologists in diagnosing and treating eye disorders and diseases. In clinic, they are responsible for completing vision screenings in adults and children; performing lensometry, auto and manual refraction, retinoscopy, and eye pressure measurements by Tonopen and applanation tonometry; performing a-scan biometry, keratometry, corneal topography, specular microscopy, ultrasound, Humphrey and Octopus visual fields, ERGs, and utilizing various imaging and photography equipment. Ophthalmic Medical Technologists also have specialized knowledge in vision science, including the assessment, evaluation and identification of disorders of binocular vision and ocular motility. The Ophthalmic Medical Technologist will help to orientate new staff members and provide continuing education on best practices in ophthalmology to ophthalmic technical staff. The Ophthalmic Medical Technologist works closely with a team of ophthalmologists, ophthalmology residents-in-training, ophthalmic personnel, RNs and support staff. They will participate in research studies, educational rounds and in-services and maintain good medical knowledge in ocular anatomy, pharmacology, diseases, and management, including current available treatments and clinical trials.
As an Ophthalmic Medical Technologist, you will perform advanced-level eye function measurements and ancillary tests to assist Ophthalmologists in diagnosing and treating eye disorders and diseases.
Active or eligible for certification by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO).Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).
Additional Required Qualifications:Ophthalmic Medical Technologist training from a JCAHPO-accredited institution required. Certification as an Ophthalmic Medical Technologist from the Joint Commission of Allied Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) required. Current Heart & Stroke Foundation CPR (BCLS-HCP) required. Minimum three years of experience as an Ophthalmic Technician or Technologist in a healthcare setting, preferably in a hospital eye clinic or an ophthalmologist’s office.
