The Department of Public Works supports Nova Scotia’s 23,000 kilometers of roads and highways and 4,100 bridges. Our District Highway Operations Division plays a critical role in managing snow and ice control services, road maintenance and repair services throughout the province.
This is your next opportunity to directly support the maintenance of Highway Operations in the Eastern District of the Province through providing technical advice and guidance, managing and motivating your crew, ensuring quality of work, and helping to achieve the work priorities of your assigned area.
As the Operations Supervisor, you will oversee day to day highway maintenance, supervise staff and their performance, and coordinate the safe repair and rehabilitation of the road network.
While utilizing your expertise, you will oversee maintenance, repair, restoration, construction, and snow/ice operations, while ensuring proper service within your geographic area. You will schedule staff and equipment, provide technical advice to support management, and help set priorities and budgets. You will administer HR and Department policies, procedures, and collective agreements while ensuring compliance with Department plans, specifications, and regulations.
As the successful candidate, you hold a 2-year technical diploma in arelated fieldas well as 6 years of related maintenance and construction experience (such as civil, road maintenance, commercial building construction, oil and gas, forestry, etc.). An equivalent combination of experience and a technical diploma will be considered.
As the ideal candidate, you have:
Knowledge of snow and ice removal operations along with the operations and maintenance of heavy equipment is desirable. Previous experience administering collective agreements would be considered assets. Familiarity with the Motor Vehicle Act and associated trucking relations, Environmental and Fisheries regulations, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Public Highways Act and Department policies and procedures are further assets to be considered.
We will assess all qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

You will travel regularly throughout your designated work area. Travel is often more than your scheduled hours and under extreme weather conditions. You may be on 24-hour call during the various seasons, including snow and ice control season, on a rotating basis and will be subject to shift work during those periods. Inspection of buildings, structures, and Right-of-Ways often requires working in precarious positions or environments.
Pay Grade: TE 26
Salary Range: $2,826.01- $3,301.71Bi-Weekly
