Job summary

Sitka Power is seeking an Operations Engineer to support the technical operation and continuous improvement of our generation fleet across Canada. The role blends field troubleshooting with analytics, building tools from historian data to detect faults and streamline reporting.

This hands-on engineer will diagnose equipment issues in the field and at a desk, contributing to reliability, availability, and performance of hydro, solar, wind, and storage assets.

Qualifications

• Engineering degree or technologist diploma with preference for Mechanical or Electrical.
• Registered or eligible for registration as a professional engineer or technologist in the applicable Canadian jurisdiction.
• Minimum 5 years in an industrial environment with hydro/wind/solar PV or battery storage experience.
• Experience with rotating equipment (turbines, generators, pumps) is preferred.
• Experience with industrial control systems (SCADA, DCS, PLC).
• Experience using historians, dashboards or data tools for troubleshooting and analysis.
• Strong root cause analysis and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to manage or support capital and outage projects including scheduling and contractor coordination.
• Valid provincial driver’s license and ability to travel across Canada.

Job Description

Sitka Power is seeking an Operations Engineer to support the technical operation and continuous improvement of our generation fleet. This role blends traditional plant engineering responsibilities, including equipment troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and maintenance coordination, with a growing analytics and automation mandate. This includes developing tools that use historian data to detect equipment anomalies, predict faults, and streamline regulatory and operational reporting.

This is an ideal role for a hands-on engineer or technologist who is equally comfortable in the field diagnosing equipment issues and at a desk building analytical models or dashboards from historian data.

Key Responsibilities

Field and Equipment

• Troubleshoot equipment and control system issues across run-of-river hydro, solar, wind, and battery storage facilities
• Perform root cause analysis on equipment failures and performance deviations, and see corrective actions through to closure
• Coordinate maintenance activities with site personnel and third-party service providers
• Hold OEMs and contractors accountable to scope, schedule, warranty terms, and quality of work
• Support outage planning and execution, including scheduling, contractor coordination, and return to service

Performance and Reporting

• Use historian and SCADA data to investigate events, quantify production losses, and support availability reporting
• Maintain and improve existing dashboards and analytical tools supporting equipment monitoring, diagnostics, and performance analysis
• Apply and maintain the fleet's availability and production-loss reporting methodology, and support its continued development
• Identify opportunities to reduce manual reporting effort and improve data accuracy
• Identify operational changes that could improve asset financial performance, and quantify the opportunity

Asset Management

• Contribute to the development of asset management plans for the operating fleet
• Support due diligence, technical assessments, and engineering reviews related to operations or development opportunities

Qualifications and Skills

Required

• Engineering degree or technologist diploma with preference given to Mechanical or Electrical disciplines
• Registered, or eligible for registration, as a professional engineer or technologist in the applicable Canadian jurisdiction
• Minimum 5 years of experience in an industrial environment with preference given to experience in hydro, wind, solar PV, or battery energy storage
• Demonstrated experience with industrial equipment; rotating equipment experience, including turbines, generators, pumps, or similar assets, is preferred
• Experience with industrial control systems (SCADA, DCS, or PLC environments)
• Experience using data historians, dashboards, or similar data tools for equipment troubleshooting and performance analysis
• Strong root cause analysis and structured problem‑solving skills
• Demonstrated ability to manage or support capital and outage projects, including scheduling and contractor coordination
• Valid provincial driver's licence in good standing
• Ability to travel to operating sites across Canada

Preferred

• Wind: drivetrain and gearbox systems, hydraulic power units, yaw and pitch systems, converters, and blade inspection or repair campaigns
• Hydro: governors, runners, intakes, trash racks, penstocks, and water licence and flow compliance
• Solar and storage: tracker systems, inverters, BESS operation, and associated protection and controls
• Working knowledge of Canary Labs / Axiom historian platforms, or equivalent
• Experience with a CMMS system
• Working knowledge of scripting or data analysis tools such as Python or SQL for reporting and analysis
• Exposure to condition monitoring and predictive analytics as it applies to equipment health

• Salary: $95,000-$115,000 depending on experience
