The Opportunity

The Power and Energy Solutions (PES) Engineering team is currently seeking a motivated Operations Engineer to join our team out of our head office in Calgary, AB.

Reporting to the Operations Engineering Manager and based at our Calgary, AB head office, this position will be part of a multi-disciplinary team responsible for providing operations engineering support as well as assist in the development and execution of the GPMC program for the Power & Energy Solutions assets.

This position will work closely with leadership in operations and commercial groups across TC Energy, as well as establish relationships with external regulatory bodies to ensure compliance. You will be exposed to TC Energy’s entire portfolio of energy assets and the programs utilized to manage our assets throughout Canada and the USA.

Please Note: This position will require travel to field sites approximately 20% of the time.

What you’ll do
  • Provide sound engineering to determine cost-effective solutions for facility issues and enhancement projects.
  • Support the Power & Energy Solutions Business Unit in meeting the requirements of the ABSA Owner User Program. i.e:
    • Supporting the Chief Inspector in integrity inspection and assessment, Fitness for Service (FFS) assessment, and other tasks delegated by the Chief Inspector
    • Ensuring inspection plans for facilities are developed. Review integrity inspection reports, identify or notify management of major findings.
    • Coordinate or participate in internal audits as required
    • Maintaining and updating pressure equipment inventory and inspection reports
    • Ensuring Operations implement closure weld procedure, tubing repair/replacement in kind program and car seal program properly
  • Support critical balance of plant (BOP) equipment within the facility including steam/water/oil/air systems, piping and valves, tanks and other systems required for reliable operation of the facility.
  • Provide technical support for operations, safety and engineering regarding safety / process safety and risk management, Participating in HAZOP / LOPA studies, accountability to complete action items.
  • Identify, scope, estimate and engineer ‘break fix’ projects to repair failed systems, machines, piping and/or components.
  • Support diagnosis & repairs and perform root cause analysis for equipment failures and abnormal operation events.
  • Support regulatory requirements for items such as flaring & emissions calculations, measurement items, others.
  • Support process optimization, troubleshooting and production efficiency evaluations.
  • Interpret codes, regulations and practices.
  • Provide onsite and construction contractor support during facility outages.
  • Mentor Engineering students
Minimum Qualifications
  • Post‑secondary Degree in Mechanical / Process / Chemical Engineering.
  • Registered, or eligible to register, with APEGA as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in good standing.
  • 10+ years of relevant energy industry experience.
  • Experience in design, commissioning, start‑up and operation of energy facilities, power generation and gas storage facilities preferred.
  • Proven ability to read & interpret P&ID’s, pressure equipment data sheets, and other design and integrity related documentation.
  • Proven Management of Change process experience and use of evaluation practices and tools required to successfully complete a change
  • Experience with risk scenario development techniques, including assignment of probabilities and consequences.
  • Understanding of asset life cycle management, system reliability and operations.
  • Working knowledge of industry regulations, codes, standards and practices relevant to design and operations (e.g. CSA, ASME B31, API, NFPA, ANSI, AER etc.) and Recognized and Generally Accepted Good Engineering Practices (RAGAGEP).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in interactions with or managing company Owner User Programs with provincial pressure equipment safety authority (i.e. ABSA).
  • Experience in facility design & operation. Power & / or gas storage operations preferred.
  • Experience with power boiler design and boiler code (i.e. ASME Section 1).
  • Proficiency with SAP and Enablon.
  • Effective stakeholder management skills.

This position requires candidates to:

  • This position will involve travel and overnight stays away from home (estimated up to 20% of work schedule during peak work periods)
  • Have and maintain a valid driver's license and safe driving record.
  • Successfully complete a pre‑employment medical screening, including drug and alcohol testing.
  • Have current, valid authorization to travel internationally to Canada and US.
