Job summary

Canadian Nuclear Laboratories seeks an Operating Engineer, Class 3, to ensure safe and efficient operation of boilers, HVAC and related utility systems that support site operations at Chalk River.

The role requires experience with regulated industrial environments, strong safety focus, and the ability to maintain logs and respond to system conditions. This is a fully on-site, unionized position with 24/7 shifting to cover operations.

Qualifications

• Grade 12 diploma is required.
• Third Class Operating Engineer qualification in Ontario.
• Valid Ontario G driver's licence is required.
• Experience operating boilers, HVAC and utility systems.

What you will be doing!

• Operating Powerhouse equipment to support site operations.
• Operating heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment, including boilers, pumps, refrigeration compressors, ventilation systems, and associated equipment.
• Ensuring equipment is operated safely and efficiently in accordance with established procedures and instructions.
• Testing operating and safety controls, including pressure switches, relief valves, thermostats, control valves, and traps to ensure proper performance.
• Adjusting instrument control settings to maintain proper temperature and humidity conditions.
• Operating, monitoring, programming, and performing minor maintenance on Distributed Digital Control (DDC) systems.
• Recording and maintaining operational data related to steam, air, water, electricity consumption, temperature, humidity, and other system conditions.
• Performing routine patrols of site buildings to identify abnormal conditions involving HVAC, sanitary sewer, firewater, and service water systems.
• Performing routine inspections of sewage treatment facilities.
• Conducting water testing and maintaining water quality in boilers and heating and cooling systems.
• Maintaining written and electronic operating logs and records.
• Maintaining high standards of housekeeping and workplace safety while complying with provincial, federal, and CNL requirements.
• Attending safety meetings, reporting safety concerns, and applying Event Free Tools throughout daily activities.
• Assisting with training, coaching, and mentoring new employees on safe work practices and procedures.
• Other duties as assigned by your manager.
  

What we are looking for:

• Education
  • Grade 12 Secondary School Graduation Diploma.
  • Qualification as a Third Class Operating Engineer in the Province of Ontario.
  • Valid Ontario Class G Driver's Licence.
• Experience
  • Experience operating and monitoring boilers, HVAC systems, utility systems, or industrial plant equipment.
  • Experience working within a regulated industrial environment with a strong focus on safety and operational reliability.
  • Experience maintaining operational logs, system records, and equipment performance data.
• Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of applicable codes, standards, and regulations, including Ontario Regulation 219/01 - Operating Engineers.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and safe work practices.
  • Knowledge of high-pressure steam boilers and associated control systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with multi-trade teams and stakeholders across a variety of disciplines.
  • Skilled in utilizing Microsoft Office applications and computer-based systems to update procedures, maintain records, and communicate effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify abnormal operating conditions and take appropriate corrective actions to maintain system performance and safety.
• Security Clearance Eligibility Required
  • Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”

• Working schedule: Hours vary to support 24/7 operations
• This position is part of the IUOE Union and is governed by the terms and conditions outlined in the IUOE Collective Agreement. As a member of this bargaining unit, you’ll benefit from clear expectations around hours of work, wages, vacation, and other conditions that support a fair and consistent working environment.
• Working in environments with varying noise levels and temperature conditions.
• Performing routine inspections and patrols throughout site facilities.
