Job summary

The Salvation Army Canada and Bermuda Territory seeks an Occupational Therapist to assess, plan, and implement rehabilitation programs for residents in a long-term care setting. You will work with a resident care team and families to tailor plans, perform cognitive screenings, and maintain thorough clinical records.

Qualifications

• Baccalaureate degree in Occupational Therapy from a recognized university
• Registration with College of Occupational Therapy of BC (COTBC)
• Eligible for membership is Canadian Association of Occupational Therapy (COAT)
• Minimum of two years’ recent experience in a long-term care setting.

Responsibilities

• Assesses habilitation needs of all residents, including cognitive function, and develops a plan for each resident using recognized occupational therapy techniques and activity modalities.
• Develops an appropriate on-going program of occupational therapy interventions and activities for each resident based on their physical, functional, cognitive, and social needs by assessing residents and planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating individual and group treatment programs.
• Collaborates with members of the Resident Care Team and with families to formulate care plans that reflect residents’ individual needs for rehabilitation, maintenance, or palliative care.
• Completes cognitive screens on an annual basis and as required for residents living with dementia.
• Maintains clinical records such as records of assessment, treatments, progress and changes in residents’ conditions or treatments, reports on residents’ progress in teem meetings and through Point Click Care.
• Provides general instructions to staff relating to musculoskeletal injury prevention / body mechanics. Provides detailed instruction to direct care staff regarding lifts and transfer techniques and positioning.
• Provides ergonomic assessments for staff as requested.
• Provides orientation to care staff and volunteers, specifically related to lifting techniques and meal assistance.
• Monitors occupational therapy equipment / supplies and coordinates the requisitioning and repair / maintenance.
• Participates in quality monitoring and improvement activities relating to occupational therapy, which may include implementing and evaluating programs / activities, goals and objectives, standard and procedures; develops principal function statements and performance indicators and reports on same to Quality Improvement Committee.
• Participates in committees such as Occupational Health and Safety, Ethics, Quality Improvement and Care Conferences (as needed).
• Maintains statistics and reports regularly on the Occupational Therapy program and any related concerns.
• Maintains a safe, secure environment for residents and staff by immediately reporting unsafe hazardous conditions and suspected resident abuse. Takes immediate action, as appropriate, to reduce / eliminate recognized safety risks and documents the incident / unusual occurrence following established procedures.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $45.15 to $50.66 with a maximum of $56.17.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
