Job summary

Sault Area Hospital is seeking an Occupational Therapist to provide assessment, treatment planning and program evaluation for inpatients and outpatients across multiple settings, including surgical, medical, ICU, rehab and neuro clinics.

You will work within the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario standards, collaborate with a broad care team, mentor learners, and stay current with best practices and legislation.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited university program in occupational therapy.
  • Current registration with, or eligible for registration with, The College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario (COTO).
  • Maintain Professional Portfolio and participate in audit process as required by COTO.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in an interdisciplinary team.
  • Flexible, adaptable, organized and able to prioritize effectively.
  • Extensive knowledge of community resources.

Responsibilities

  • Provide assessment, program planning, treatment, follow-up and program evaluation to hospital and community clients.
  • Screen patients and referrals for priority of intervention and facilitate referrals to appropriate health care or community programs.
  • Assess physical, cognitive and functional abilities; plan and carry out treatment plans to improve function.
  • Collaborate with patients and families to develop treatment goals and encourage participation.
  • Supervise Occupational Therapy Assistants (OTAs) and delegate treatment components.
  • Communicate with the interdisciplinary care team including physicians.

Reporting to the Manager of Allied Health, the successful candidate will provide assessment, program planning, treatment, follow-up and program evaluation to both inpatients and outpatients following practice standards set by the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario. Successful applicants will join a large team of experienced Occupational Therapists and have an opportunity to work in a variety of settings, including inpatient surgical, medical, intensive care, stroke, geriatric rehab, high-intensity rehab, and transitional care or outpatient neuro rehab and hand clinic.

DUTIES:
  • Provide assessment, program planning, treatment, follow-up and program evaluation to clients in the hospital and community.
  • Screen patients and referrals for priority of intervention and facilitate referrals to appropriate health care and/or community programs.
  • Assess patients’ physical, cognitive and functional abilities; plan and carry out individually designed treatment plans to maintain, improve or restore physical, cognitive and functional abilities and prevent dysfunction.
  • Collaborate with patients and their families/care givers in developing treatment goals and encourage family participation in the development, implementation and ongoing modification of the treatment plan.
  • Assign components of treatment to, and supervise the practice of, Occupational Therapy Assistants (OTAs).
  • Communicate regularly with the interdisciplinary care team, including physicians and other healthcare professionals.
  • Work within the scope of practice and standards laid out by the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario and relevant legislation, policies, and procedures.
  • Act as a role model, mentor, and/or preceptor for learners, new grads, and new hires from various disciplines.
  • Stay up to date on best practices, research and legislative requirements.
  • Be flexible and accommodating to support evolving workload demands and priorities.
  • Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Graduate of an accredited university program in occupational therapy.
