Overview

Our Prevention Services division is dedicated to the prevention of workplace injury, illness, disease, and death. We engage with employers and workers to reduce risk and keep workplaces healthy and safe primarily through education, consultation, and enforcement.

We have a strong focus on Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) and we want you to help ensure every worker in British Columbia goes home safely at the end of the day.

As an Occupational Safety Officer (OSO) you will have at least four years of direct hands‑on progressive industry experience in one or two of the following industries and have been involved in workplace health and safety in the following industries: Agriculture, Asbestos, Construction, Fishing & Marine, Forestry, Coastal Falling, Health Care, Health & Safety Program Management, Industrial Construction, Oil & Gas, Manufacturing, Psychological Health & Safety, Trades and Utilities, Transportation & Warehousing, and Wood Products.

  • Abbotsford – Health Care, H&S Program Management, and Psychological H&S, Health Care
  • Courtenay – Fishing & Marine, Construction, Industrial Construction, Trades & Utilities, and Oil & Gas

How you'll make a difference

You’ll help ensure B.C. workers go home safely at the end of their workday.

Where you'll work

In this role, you’ll work primarily in the field or community and remotely, based on the operational needs of the position. Occasionally you may be asked to come to the office for training and orientation.

What you’ll do

Engage with workers and employers from various industries to reduce risk and keep workplaces healthy and safe through education, consultation, and enforcement. You will:

  • Proactively inspect workplaces to ensure a safe work environment is being maintained and convey potential hazards, risks, and/or controls
  • Mitigate potential health or safety hazards to workers, ensuring workers and the employer are apprised of their responsibilities, and that first‑aid services and equipment meet current criteria
  • Write orders to ensure compliance with the Workers Compensation Act and Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Regulation
  • Consult with and educate employers, workers, and others on occupational health and safety matters
  • Partner with industry to ensure the success of safety initiatives
  • Consistently model the appropriate level of organizational behaviours expected of all WorkSafeBC employees: responsive, respectful, fair, collaborative, accountable, and forward‑thinking.

  • Work variable hours, be available for emergency call‑out after hours or weekends, and be willing to travel throughout the province
Your background and experience
  • A minimum of 4 years of relevant and progressive experience in one or two of the industries listed above, giving you broad knowledge of the industry's processes, equipment, terminology, risks, and hazards. Possible roles held include superintendent, health and safety representative, owner, foreman, tradesperson, equipment operator, health and safety coordinator, health and safety manager, or health & safety consultant.
  • General knowledge of occupational health and safety as evidenced by education (e.g., OHS diploma), certification (e.g., CRSP/CSP), and/or experience in OH&S (e.g., formal OH&S experience or active Joint Health Committee member) is a requirement.

Salary

$48.46 – $61.09 per hour, with regular increases that will commensurate with experience.
