Qualifications

The Opportunity

You will be part of our Occupational Hygiene and Safety team, working with a close‑knit group of occupational hygienists, hazardous materials professionals, safety professionals, and technologists. As an occupational hygiene technician you will conduct on‑site assessments and monitoring, and as a consultant you will provide occupational hygiene support to a variety of public and private clients. Working under supervision, you will progress to greater autonomy and responsibility. WSP offers mentoring, required safety and technical training, on‑job shadowing, and job‑specific training to accelerate your learning.

Your Impact

    • Using technical knowledge of methods, regulations, equipment, tools, systems, controls, and procedures.
    • Making routine and non‑routine decisions with guidance from your supervising Project Manager.
  • Handle various assignments that differ in scope and complexity, providing:
    • Preparing and calibrating sampling equipment for field use.
    • Identifying site issues or project concerns and recommending corrective actions.
    • Conducting site assessments for asbestos, mold, lead, PCB’s, etc.
    • Collecting samples in the field, interpreting data, and preparing reports.
    • Interpreting and/or analyzing sample/data results against legislative requirements and industry guidelines.
    • Supervising asbestos abatement activities.
  • Conducting air quality assessments (indoor air, welding fume, noise).
  • Basic client liaison to ensure health, safety, and occupational hygiene needs are addressed.
  • Participating in the Health, Safety and Quality program.
  • Engaging in technical training programs.
  • Accommodating client scheduling needs, including evening, overnight, and weekend shifts.
  • Fieldwork (~90%) and office duties (~10%), requiring travel across Alberta, Western, and Northern Canada for extended periods with paid overtime as needed.
  • Conducting field surveys, preparing technical reports, collaborating with multidisciplinary colleagues, and delivering client deliverables.
  • All other duties as required.
The Skills That Set You Apart
  • Occupational Hygiene technician certificate, diploma from a chemical or environmental program, or equivalent technical, trade, or college education. A Bachelor of Science (or similar) is also acceptable.
  • Membership in a professional organization is an asset but not required.
  • Experience at any level in Occupational Hygiene, including hazardous material assessments (asbestos, lead, silica dust).
  • Experience working with a hazardous materials abatement contractor is an asset.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills; proficiency in MS Office.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license with no restrictions and access to a reliable vehicle, registration, and insurance.
  • Requirement to wear personal protective equipment (respiratory protection, hard hat, high‑visibility vests, fire‑retardant coveralls, safety boots, safety glasses).
