Position Summary
The Occupational Health & Wellness Specialist is a key role responsible for the end‑to‑end management of employee health, disability, and organizational wellness. This position bridges the gap between clinical recovery and operational productivity by managing complex disability cases, overseeing the Attendance Support Program, and developing proactive wellness initiatives. Serving as a vital liaison between employees, healthcare providers, insurance carriers, and union leadership, the Specialist ensures that all health‑related programs comply with collective agreements, human rights legislation, and safety regulations.
Major Responsibilities
Disability Case Management & Return‑to‑Work
- Lead the rehabilitation process for disabled employees by monitoring treatment efficacy and collaborating with the employee, managers, insurers, and the union (where applicable) to create achievable disability support plans
- Develop tailored rehabilitation strategies and maintain consistent, supportive contact with ill or injured employees
- Coordinate return‑to‑work (RTW) plans with all stakeholders, identifying systemic barriers and assisting departments in finding suitable transitional or modified duties
- Identify risks associated with particular jobs, research, evaluate, monitor, mitigate, and develop prevention plans
- Track, monitor, and analyze disability claims to identify trends and recommend data‑driven actions to improve outcomes and reduce costs
Attendance & Health Support
- Administer the corporate Attendance Support Program, providing expert guidance to people leaders and employees on attendance patterns and support strategies
- Act as the primary point of contact on health matters between the medical community, employees, management, and union representatives
- Provide direct guidance and referrals to employees to facilitate mental and physical health
Corporate Wellness & Benefit Administration
- Research, develop, implement, and evaluate wellness initiatives designed to foster a psychologically safe and healthy workplace
- Maintain all employee benefit programs and propose corporate initiatives based on cost analysis and employee health statistics
- Identify job‑specific health risks and develop prevention or mitigation plans to reduce workplace injuries
Compliance & Committee Involvement
- Serve as an active member of the Joint Health, Safety, and Wellness Committee, providing clinical resources and guidance to ensure a safe and healthy environment
- Ensure all programs comply with Human Rights legislation, Collective Agreements, and Occupational Health and Safety regulations
- Maintain accurate, confidential medical and attendance record‑keeping systems in accordance with privacy laws
Minimum Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Degree or diploma in Occupational Health, Human Resources, Kinesiology, Nursing, or a related field, with five years of experience in disability management, ideally within a unionized environment
Knowledge
- Deep understanding and working knowledge of insured disability plans, as well as the Canadian Human Rights Code, WSIB, and Canada Labour Code, Part II, Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations
Skills
- Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to navigate sensitive conversations with empathy and professionalism
- Ability to apply a case management model when assessing, developing, implementing, evaluating, and adjusting case plans
- Ability to successfully initiate, implement, and manage projects and programs
- Strong problem‑solving abilities and analytical skills
- Advanced skills in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Google Workspace (Email, Docs, Sheets, Slides)
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional designation, such as COHN‑C (Certified Occupational Health Nurse – Canada), CDMP (Certified Disability Management Professional) or CHRP/L (Certified Human Resources Professional/Leader)
Conditions of Employment
- Successfully undergo a satisfactory criminal records check, Type 2
- Sign and abide by an Employee Confidentiality Statement
- Adhere to workplace security, privacy, and confidentiality policies, procedures, and legislation
- Must be aware of, be competent, and comply with the duties of a supervisor as legislated under the latest version of the Federal Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and Part II of the Canada Labour Code
