Job Purpose

The Occupational Health Nurse / Practitioner is responsible for pre-screening medical assessment, providing care, first aid and episodic treatment of minor occupational injuries and illnesses. This position works toward the prevention of illness & injury, protection from work-related and environmental hazards, and promotion and restoration of health. The individual will maintain accurate medical records related to legal, regulatory and reporting requirements. The individual is able to assist and provide recommendations for non-occupational related injuries, illnesses on employee fit for duty reporting to work and RTW programs in consultation with the employee's health care practitioner. May be required to assist managers to manage sickness absences more effectively. Motivated to work independently or in a team.

Responsibilities
  • Develop new employee pre-placement medical and functional abilities testing process as per the Marwood Recruitment Policy, procedures and forms.
  • Maintain total confidentiality of employee medical records
  • Comply with ethical, professional and legal requirements for Occupational Health Nursing and with the organizations' policies and procedures
  • Primary contact to the Ministry of Health, regionally and provincially
  • Pre-screening all new employees to ensure new hires are fit for duty as per job requirements
  • Participate in the occupational health maintenance program through various activities such as pre-employment, periodic assessments, physical examinations recommendations, arranging or completing routine tests and measurements.
  • Direct liaison to Company Physician and Specialists
  • Review all PDA job functional abilities and ergonomics and advise Health and Safety Manager - Corporate
  • Manage the Marwood Health and Wellness Program / Biometrics
  • Manage the Mental Health Wellness Program
  • Manage and coordinate the bi-annual employee audiogram testing
  • Assist the HSE Manager Corporate - in the review of WSIB occupational claims, functional abilities capabilities and RTW Program
  • Assist the Director of Human Resources & Communications and HSE Manager- Corporate, and Plant HR Generalists in the review of non-occupational transitional RTW programs, and modified work programs
  • Advise on job performance methods and practices to minimize the risk of stress to workers and reports deviations from established or legislated methods or practices to management.
  • Access the functional abilities competence of workers by reviewing related data through observation, measurements or interviewing advising the Health and Safety Manager - Corporate and Plant Health and Safety HR Generalists
  • Medical assistance to injured workers regarding a minor injury or occupational disease by making nursing diagnoses and treating the problem or arranging transportation.
  • Manage and ensure first aid preparedness by maintaining adequate stock of first aid supplies and replenishing first aid stations.
  • Recommendations to employees who require physiotherapy, industrial hygiene,
  • Support to the Plant HR Generalists and JHSC on EFAP, Health and Safety, Ergonomics and Modified Work RTW programs
  • Prepare and maintain job-related records, reports and other assigned documents.
  • Stay current with occupational health, medicine and nursing practices.
  • Participate in required weekly corporate HSE meetings, Health-related policy review providing input and suggestions .
  • Maintain absolute confidentiality on medical records and advise management on important issues
  • Continuous professional development
  • Some training of managers and supervisors regarding the use of occupational health services may be required.
  • Implement drug / alcohol / impairment screening tools, strategies for when a reasonable cause has been established.
  • Planned rehabilitation strategies to help the workforce maintain or restore their workability and RTW.
  • Holistic and comprehensive documentation of all non-occupational, non-compensable, sociopsychological or personal factors or injuries that may have an impact on workplace health and safety.

Key Requirements
  • University or College graduate in Occupational Health Nurse Program or equivalent field
  • Computer efficiency skills in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and databases as required
  • Five (5+) years Occupational RN Diploma / Associate degree required, BSN or BS preferred
  • Certification as Occupational Health Nursing (COHN) or Occupational Health Nursing Specialist (COHN-S) preferred
  • Valid provincial nursing license required and Certified in Healthcare Provider CPR / AED
  • Must be able to travel to other plant locations
