Position Summary

Reporting to the Director, Surgery Program, the Nurse Practitioner (NP) will serve as a Registered Nurse in the Extended Class RN (EC). The NP is a key member of the Acute Care Surgical Service, providing leadership and specialized comprehensive surgical care. Working with the inter‑professional team and physician partners, the NP formulates clinical decisions and develops patient care plans for surgical indications, aiming to reduce length of stay, improve patient flow, and enhance patient experience. The NP participates in continuous quality assurance and improvement activities to optimize surgical patient care.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
  • Act as a role model and resource for acute surgical nursing practice.
  • Provide advanced assessment and therapeutic decision‑making for patients indicated for surgery.
  • Facilitate interdisciplinary care through regular team meetings and act as a liaison among clinicians, patients, and family.
  • Coordinate seamless transitions at intake and discharge with primary care and community partners.
  • Participate in the implementation and evaluation of continuous quality initiatives.
Qualifications
  • Current RN (EC) registration; Nurse Practitioner certificate in Acute Care or Primary Care.
  • Master's degree in Nursing required.
  • Orthopaedic NP certificate required; membership in RNAO and the Nurse Practitioners Association of Ontario.
  • Certification in a relevant surgical nursing specialty (e.g., Medical‑Surgical, PeriAnesthesia, Orthopaedics, Perioperative) or commitment to obtain within 18 months.
  • Minimum of 2 years of NP experience in surgical nursing.
  • Strong knowledge of surgical patient care pathways, case management, and patient education.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking, problem‑solving, interpersonal, and organizational leadership skills.
  • Proficiency in Meditech and Microsoft Office (asset).
