About Our Opportunity

We are looking for an enthusiastic and knowledgeable Nature Interpreter to join our team. You will have the opportunity to engage and educate our visitors by preparing and delivering presentations for nature education programs. Our programs are for everyone from students, youth, community groups and the general public. The topics are related to wildlife, habitats, and conservation. You will also help develop and deliver of a full range of interpretive programs and related materials.

Primary Accountabilities

In this role, you will need to communicate effectively with people of all ages about the Wildlife Park and Ducks Unlimited programs and mandates. You will be working outdoors in various weather conditions and must be comfortable to lead walks, hikes and wetland exploration programs. You are also responsible for facility upkeep and administrative work relating to the position.

You will also assist with:

• Youth camp programs;
• Care and cleaning of displays;
• Critter care and collection;
• Retail duties in the gift store;
• Collecting fees for admission, events, education groups, and tours;
• Maintenance requirements for trails and facilities (such as daily cleaning of washrooms, washing windows, vacuuming, weeding, trail checks and other related duties); and,
• Visitor Services activities and special events

This position reports to the Park Education Supervisor.

Qualifications and Experience

As the successful candidate you have:

• graduated from high school;
• have three (3) years of related experience;
• Class 5 driver’s licence.

Please note that checks required in the recruitment process will include a criminal background and vulnerable sector check, and child abuse registry check.

Related experience may include providing nature education programs to groups, working at a wildlife park or zoo, and conservation/wildlife work. An equivalent combination of training and experience will be considered.

You can effectively research, check, and pull together information from reputable sources on topics such as wildlife, habitats, and conservation. You have demonstrated organizational, communication (written and verbal) and presentation skills and the ability to deliver engaging programs to a diverse audience in a clear and entertaining way. You have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team. Additionally, you must have good working knowledge of computers and standard office software such as word processing, spreadsheet and email. You will also have Basic First Aid/CPR certification or be willing to obtain certification.

Extensive knowledge of Nova Scotia wildlife, particularly wetland species, ecology, management, and conservation, is considered an asset. Experience/knowledge with local tourism and previous work at a wildlife park or zoo will be considered additional assets.

We will assess the above qualifications using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.
