Mental Health Capacity Building Programs

1 Permanent Full-Time (12-month position)

Medicine Hat Public School Division is seeking one (1) Permanent Full-Time, 12-month Success Coach to continue the work of our MyPlace program. The Mental Health Capacity Building Programs are grant-funded through Recovery Alberta to provide school-based addiction and mental health promotion and prevention for children, youth, and families. As part of a school and program-based team, the successful candidate will develop and deliver developmentally appropriate, evidence and research‑based programming for teens that aligns with the program's mandate and the school's needs.

Success Coaches play a crucial role in building capacity within the school and the wider community by increasing awareness and enhancing skills related to optimal mental health. They achieve this by facilitating meaningful discussions, delivering informative workshops, and providing resource materials that empower all members of the school community to prioritize and maintain their mental well‑being. Success Coaches contribute to fostering a nurturing and mentally healthy environment for students, staff, and the broader community.

Details of Position :
  • Permanent full‑time position working 37.5 hours per week
  • Monday through Friday from 8 : 00 AM to 4 : 00 PM or 8 : 30 AM to 4 : 30 PM (with flexibility to work outside of these hours as required)
Salary & Benefits :
  • $42,230 - $51,294 (starting place on the grid will be determined by experience)
  • Position includes full healthcare benefits including extended health, dental, life & disability that start upon commencement of employment. Division covers 100% of the total monthly benefits premium for Alberta School Employees Benefit Plan (ASEBP) and 85% for dental premiums.
  • Includes a generous Health Spending Account / Health & Wellness Account.
  • Participation in the LAPP pension plan after 1 year of service.

The responsibilities of this position include the following but are not limited to :

  • Experience with delivering programming and comfortable with public speaking
  • Experience working with Junior High and High School students
  • Familiar with the developmental, educational, emotional, social, and recreational needs of children, youth, and families
  • The ability to work in multiple schools.
  • Flexibility to work outside of regular working hours, including evenings and weekends for events
  • Takes initiative and is able to work independently as well as work in team settings
  • Develop and implement universal mental health programming for classroom and community implementation
  • Knowledge regarding community resources that will meet or enhance the person served
  • Ability to work during the summer and actively participate in recreational and leisure activities with students and their families
Education and Qualifications
  • A Diploma in related health or social sciences will be considered an asset
  • Knowledgeable about addiction and Mental Health service
  • A reliable vehicle in good repair and valid class 5 driver's license
  • Current First Aid and CPR
  • Current Assist Training
  • Current Criminal Record Check (with Vulnerable Sector) & Child Intervention Check
  • Excellent organizational skills, strong teamwork skills, the ability to prioritize multiple demands, excellent interpersonal skills, time management, flexibility and initiative
Experience
  • Minimum two years of experience in addiction and mental health or a health / human service‑related role
  • Experienced working with teens in large and small group settings
  • Comfortable with public speaking, with the ability to deliver presentations and programming to both large and small groups
  • Able to work well with a team and work with community agencies
  • Competent in the use of technology (including Google email and internet navigation)
