Position Summary

We are looking for a team player that is detail oriented and takes pride in a job well done. The individual must be able to provide quality service to our residents. The successful candidate will be friendly, service oriented and display an attitude that supports our Company philosophies and goals. This position is key to our residents’ satisfaction and enjoyment of their surroundings.

Reporting to the Food & Beverage Manager, the Food Service Assistant will be responsible for setting, serving and clearing tables in addition to cleaning and maintaining the dining room and serving area. The incumbent will help prepare food, wash dishes and do general cleaning as required. Past experience in a fine dining atmosphere in the food service industry would be a definite asset. The successful applicant will be required to possess or obtain current Food Safe and Serving it Right Certificates.

This role involves a variety of duties that may change daily, requiring flexibility to support operational needs.

All duties and responsibilities are carried out in alignment with Optima Living’s mission, vision, and values, promoting person-centered care by respecting the uniqueness, dignity, and self-determination of residents to promote maximum personal and functional independence. These duties are performed within the framework of established organizational policies and procedures, industry best practices, while adhering to applicable regulations and standards.

Responsibilities
  • Performs routine cleaning tasks which involves sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and polishing surfaces throughout the premises including bathrooms.
  • Ensures bedrooms are tidy and well-maintained and beds are made, and linens are changed in accordance with established procedures.
  • Ensures garbage receptacles are emptied and cleaned routinely.
  • Safely handles cleaning agents and equipment in accordance with established procedures.
  • Replenishes disposable housekeeping supplies in common areas as needed.
  • Responds promptly to special requests and cleaning emergencies.
  • Serves as the primary contact for residents, team members and emergency services in security related matters during night shifts if applicable.
  • Ensures proper handling of all laundry items by collecting, sorting and storing soiled linen in a sanitary manner until laundered.
  • Manages linen care by washing, ironing, pressing, folding, and ensuring proper storage and delivery.
  • Inspects linens for accurate labeling and identifies items in need of repair.
  • Disposes and records inventory items that are worn, damaged, or no longer usable.
  • Ensures the laundry area, equipment, and supplies are kept clean, organized, and in proper working condition.
  • Ensures work records are accurate and current.
  • Assists with basic food preparation and ensuring proper food presentation, portion control, and serving temperatures.
  • Serves meals and beverages to residents according to their dietary restrictions and individual preferences while encouraging independent feeding.
  • Prepares and serves a variety of beverages, including freshly brewed coffee and tea.
  • Dispenses nourishments for delivery to resident areas.
  • Assists with setup, serving, cleaning, and sanitizing of the dining room and/or servery for daily meals, special events, large orders, and catered functions.
  • Interacts with residents to take meal orders and answer menu questions.
  • Provides tray services according to the care or service plan.
  • Assists with receiving and storing food and supplies in designated areas, following food safety, sanitation procedures, and proper stock rotation.
  • Operates the commercial dishwasher to wash and sanitize dishes, pots, pans, trays, and utensils.
  • Ensures a safe and sanitary environment for team members and residents through adherence to organizational standards and protocols.
  • Promptly reports unsafe conditions, incidents, or concerns to supervisor, General Manager or Health & Safety Committee.
  • Identifies maintenance issues and reports them following established maintenance procedures.
  • Responds promptly during emergency codes in alignment with organizational standards and protocols.
  • Contributes to quality improvement initiatives by sharing ideas and providing feedback.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and compliance with Occupational Health and Safety regulations.
  • Ensures adherence to infection control policies and procedures through regular audits, observations, and investigations.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality of resident medical and personal information in accordance with privacy legislation.
  • Completes orientation upon hire and annual mandatory education as assigned.
  • Supports new team members through their orientation process.
  • Respects and upholds the Resident Bill of Rights and the Assisted Living Rights of Residents.
  • Participates in team meetings and stays informed on relevant internal communications.
  • Performs other duties as required to support operational needs.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Experience in a food services, laundry or housekeeping role is an asset.
  • Knowledge of cleaning techniques, equipment, and materials is an asset.
  • Knowledge of safe food handling and sanitation practices is an asset.
  • Experience in a residential care or mental health environment is an asset.
  • Strong personal hygiene practices are required.
  • Food Safe certification is an asset.
  • CPR and First Aid certification is an asset.
  • Ability to communicate professionally and maintain respectful relationships with residents, team members, volunteers and visitors.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Demonstrates the ability to effectively organize, prioritize and problem solve.
  • Ability to work independently and in cooperation with others.
  • Ability to manage and resolve difficult and challenging situations effectively and respectfully.
  • Physical and mental ability to carry out the duties of the position including adherence to provincial health legislation.
  • Ability to safely operate equipment according to established protocols.
  • Flexibility to work a variety of shifts.
