Description

Reporting to the General Manager, the Mine Engineer (Business Optimization) is responsible for identifying, evaluating, and implementing opportunities that enhance the efficiency, productivity, and financial performance of Barrick Hemlo’s underground operations. This position plays a key role in driving business improvement initiatives by combining strong technical knowledge with financial and operational insight. The successful candidate will work closely with senior site leadership to assess potential improvements, develop business cases, and implement solutions that deliver measurable value to the operation.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with the General Manager and Underground Operations leadership to identify and prioritize improvement opportunities across all aspects of the mining operation.
  • Conduct thorough evaluations of identified opportunities to determine their practicality, technical soundness, and potential value creation.
  • Develop and present clear, data-driven business cases to support investment decisions for operational improvements.
  • Lead or support the implementation of approved initiatives, ensuring alignment with safety, productivity, and cost optimization goals.
  • Track and report project outcomes, highlighting realized benefits and lessons learned.
  • Leverage data and analytics to assess performance trends and identify bottlenecks or inefficiencies.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive continuous improvement and promote a culture of innovation.
  • Prepare detailed reports, financial analyses, and presentations using Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Ensure all improvement initiatives align with Barrick’s safety standards, operational excellence principles, and core values.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in an underground mining operation.
  • Strong business acumen with the ability to analyze financial impacts and support strategic decision‑making.
  • Proven track record in project evaluation, business case development, and operational improvement initiatives.
  • Excellent analytical, problem‑solving, and communication skills.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across teams and influence at multiple organizational levels.
  • Commitment to safety, sustainability, and continuous improvement.
  • Physically capable of performing underground fieldwork, including walking steep grades and lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Valid Class G driver’s licence required; ability to operate manual transmission is considered an asset.
  • Preference for candidates residing locally and able to work a 4 days on / 3 days off schedule.
