Overview

Position description

Reporting to the Director, Accessibility and Student Wellness, the Counsellor is primarily responsible for providing personal and psychological counselling services to registered Mount Allison students. The Counsellor also facilitates educational outreach programs and coordinates specific campus support service programs. Members of the Counselling Services team are responsible for sharing the coordination of all counselling programs and the provision of front line services.

Responsibilities
  • Provide front-line psychological counselling services to Mount Allison students including: intake and assessment; therapy sessions for clients with a broad range of personal and psychological concerns; case management; referrals; crisis intervention; trauma support; appointment scheduling, and coordination of care with other support personnel.
  • Create and keep confidential case files and notes as per any licensing body requirements and Mount Allison processes.
  • Stay current on research and best practices in personal and psychological counselling.
  • Develop and facilitate educational outreach and/or training programs as required.
  • Provide consultation as needed for Student Affairs staff pertaining to student mental health and wellness issues.
  • Coordinate where appropriate with Meighen Centre, Wellness Centre, Health Services, and Student Affairs staff.
  • Responsible for the updating of counselling services’ publicity, media, and documentation materials.
  • Complete monthly and annual statistics on counselling services.
Qualifications/skills
  • Master’s degree in Counselling, Social Work, Psychology or related discipline from a recognized university.
  • Certification or eligibility to be certified with the College of Licensed Counselling Therapists of New Brunswick or the New Brunswick Association of Social Workers.
  • Minimum of 3 years of related experience required, preferably in an academic environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communications skills.
  • Effective public speaker: demonstrated experience in development and execution of public presentations.
  • Experience in coordination of outreach and/or educational programs.
  • Experience in training and supervision of volunteers and/or student personnel.
  • Knowledge and experience in assessing and treating clients who have experienced trauma related to sexual violence.
  • Ability to work successfully within a team environment.
Additional Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with young adults as an educator and/or direct service provider.
  • Certified Mental Health First Aid Instructor, Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training Instructor, or other Mental health programming experience.
