Overview

The Mental Health and Addictions Counsellor is a key member of the Primary Community Care Team (PCC) providing direct, community based, culturally sensitive, mental health, addictions, and family violence counselling services to clients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide counselling services for individuals, families, and groups on mental health, addictions, and family violence using best practice models.
  • Conduct assessments (screening, intake, bio-psycho-social) for diverse client groups and conditions (e.g., depression, trauma, addictions).
  • Deliver treatment and aftercare, including outpatient therapy, discharge planning, and medication monitoring.
  • Lead case management, coordinate care with professionals and agencies, make referrals, and advocate for clients.
  • Maintain documentation (clinical notes, reports) and participate in program evaluation and improvement.
  • Educate and consult with community agencies and stakeholders; provide workshops, training, and awareness sessions.
  • Perform crisis interventions, including suicide risk assessments, mental status exams, and emergency referrals.
Key Qualifications
  • A Master's Degree in a social science field with a minimum of one (1) year of relevant counselling experience in addictions, mental health, and/or family violence.
  • A Bachelor's Degree in social sciences with a minimum of three (3) years of relevant counselling experience in addictions, mental health, and/or family violence.
  • A Diploma in Psychiatric Nursing with a minimum of five (5) years of relevant counselling experience in addictions, mental health, and/or family violence.
Additional Experience Requirements
  • Experience must include clinically supervised education or work under a qualified clinical counselling supervisor. A minimum of 500 supervised hours, with at least 120 hours of direct client contact.
  • Class 5 Drivers Licence is Mandatory.
