Job summary

Chartwell Retirement Residences in Oakville seeks a Memory Living Manager to lead the Memory Living Neighborhood, directing the Memory Living team and ensuring dementia-care standards to create a caring home for residents. The role collaborates with the Health & Wellness Manager and Regional Manager of Care to plan and execute standards, and to support resident families.

Qualifications

  • Minimum two (2) years of related healthcare experience.
  • Minimum two (2) years with residents with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias in a residential setting.
  • Minimum two (2) years of previous management experience preferred.
  • Registration as a Practical Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • A degree such as gerontology, therapeutic recreation or related field with minimum of three years of management and direct supervision experience preferred.
  • Completion of specialized behavioral education certification programs (GPA, P.I.E.C.E.S, Montessori methods) is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Hires, trains, coaches, supervises and leads a quality team.
  • Plans, organizes, develops and leads overall operation in the Memory Living Neighborhood.
  • Partners with Life Enrichment to ensure a variety of activities are available throughout the day and evening.
  • Designs, schedules and facilitates the Neighborhood program, incorporating Life Skills and dementia-appropriate activities.
  • Communicates professionally with Health & Wellness Manager, General Manager and Department Leads.
  • Ensures all staff have completed required training and renewals.
  • Provides coaching, support, direction and feedback to staff.
  • Promotes a positive, respectful and supportive environment for residents, families, visitors and staff.
  • Follows health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Addresses identified safety issues in a timely manner.

Job Overview

The Memory Living Manager will work collaboratively with the Health & Wellness Manager and the Regional Manager of Care in planning, managing, and leading all aspects of the Memory Living Neighbourhood, including directing the Memory Living team members and executing the Memory Living Program Standards. The Manager is passionate about providing the highest quality of services to residents and creating a caring home environment for individuals with dementia or Alzheimer’s.

Key Activities

The role is people‑intensive, with a substantial component involving resident/family relations and team member relations. The Manager is a hands‑on leader who works alongside Neighborhood team members while creating a resident‑centered environment.

Resident Relations
  • Builds relationships and interacts with residents and families.
  • Provides a sense of routine and structure, while supporting flexibility and spontaneity.
  • Uses the nursing process and dementia care intervention strategies to provide highly individualized care.
  • Coordinates communications with residents, families and Neighborhood team.
  • Completes required documentation for admissions, discharges and ongoing care as per Program Standards.
  • Assists in developing person‑centered life plans.
  • Ensures residents enjoy structured daily activities.
  • Participates in community outreach.
Leadership

Regulatory Compliance
  • Ensures team members perform duties in accordance with policies, procedures, regulations, laws and policies.
  • Follows health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Addresses identified safety issues in a timely manner.
  • Maintains confidentiality of resident personal information.
Experience
  • Minimum two (2) years of related healthcare experience.
  • Minimum two (2) years with residents with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias in a residential setting.
  • Minimum two (2) years of previous management experience preferred.
  • Registered Practical Nurse with current certificate of competence with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • A degree such as gerontology, therapeutic recreation or related field with minimum of three years of management and direct supervision experience preferred.
  • Completion of a specialized behavioral education certification program (GPA, P.I.E.C.E.S, Montessori methods) an asset.
Skills & Abilities
