Job summary

Interior Health's Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital in Trail, BC is seeking a casual Medical Transcriptionist who values accuracy, teamwork, and patient‑centered care. You will transcribe, interpret, and edit dictation for multiple clinical disciplines and diagnostic reports, ensuring correct content, grammar, punctuation and formatting.

This daytime role runs Monday to Friday, 08:30 to 16:00, with days off Sundays, Saturdays and statutory holidays.

Qualifications

• Grade 12, graduation from an approved program in medical transcription
• One year's recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Ability to keyboard at 60 wpm

Responsibilities

• Transcribes, interprets, and edits dictation for the health record across multiple clinical disciplines
• Performs related clerical duties (answering calls, filing, typing, etc.)
• Ensures content, grammar, punctuation, and formatting are correct by clarifying with the dictating physician
• Reviews work performance feedback and integrates it into practice
• Participates in continuous quality improvement activities
• Assists with orienting new staff or students and performs other duties as assigned

What Will You Work On?

The Medical Transcriptionist transcribes, interprets, and edits dictation for multiple clinical disciplines and diagnostic departments.

Performs related clerical duties

• In accordance with established policies and procedures transcribes, interprets, and edits dictation for the health record such as consultations, operative reports, discharge summaries, and diagnostic reports for multiple clinical disciplines using approved transcription and speech recognition software according to established standards and guidelines. Ensures content, grammar, punctuation, and format are correct by clarifying inconsistencies with the dictating physician, reviewing reference material and/or referring to PPL (or designate).
• Carries out assigned duties as per department standards and guidelines. Identifies duties to complete during shift and completes in priority order in accordance with established department standards.
• Assists with inquiries regarding status of jobs or requests for prioritized dictation in accordance with established policies and procedures, escalating as necessary.
• Reviews job performance feedback provided by Transcription Leadership team and integrates into own work practices.
• Performs a variety of clerical duties such as answering telephones; maintaining files and records; identifying deficiencies, and following up on incomplete charts; typing documents/reports/correspondence; photocopying and distributing transcribed reports; etc.
• Participates in continuous quality improvement activities by performing duties such as providing input/feedback to the PPL (or designate) on work procedures and opportunities for process improvement.
• Assists with orienting new staff and/or students by performing duties such as demonstrating work procedures, demonstrating use of office equipment/systems and providing related information.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

What should your application include?

• A 5-minute typing test (60+ NWPM) from a recognized institution, completed within the past 48 months (non-supervised tests not accepted).
• A Medical Transcription Certificate
• Your Resume outlining one year recent related experience, Or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
• A Cover Letter stating your availability to start in a new position and on-call, casual work (i.e. days of the week).
